The year 2016 is slowly coming to an end and as far as the Malayalam film industry is concerned, the year has been an eventful one. From commercially successful movies to critically acclaimed movies, the industry witnessed some fabulous movies in 2016.

Action Hero Biju
The year did start off on a positive note with Action Hero Biju, directed by Abrid Shine. This film, which had a realistic approach did break all the conventions of police stories in Malayalam films. By all means, Action Hero Biju is one of the best movies of this year.
Maheshinte Prathikaaram
Dilesh Pothen came up with this simple yet impactful movie in 2016, that mesmerized the audiences. With some light humour and easily recognizable characters, Maheshinte Prathikaaram narrated a simple story in the most effective way.
Kammatipaadam
Kammatipaadam was one of the most awaited movies of the year 2016. Rightly, the film directed by Rajeev Ravi lived up to the expectations of the viewers and the movie impressed one and all, with its perfection in all sections.
James And Alice
James and Alice, which marked the directorial debut of Sujith Vaassudev, was rather a serious take on husband-wife relationship. Riding high on quality content and some scintillating performances, the film did make a mark of its own in 2016.
Kasaba
Kasaba, one of the big releases of Mammootty in 2016, had the actor in full-form. Mammootty got back to the role of mass police roles and what the audiences got was a perfect entertainer.
Guppy
It is sad that the film didn't receive the box office success that it deserved. The film, despite getting extremely positive reviews couldn't do well at the box office. But, upon its DVD release, the film has been getting grand reviews, which ideally proves the quality of the film.
Oppam
Oppam marked the grand comeback of Priyadarshan-Mohanlal team. The film, in the lines of a thriller, did stay true to the genre and at the same time served its purposes as an entertainer, as well. Importantly, the film offered Mohanlal a role with good scope of performance.
Pulimurugan
Last but not the least, here is the biggest movie of the year. Pulimurugan showed that such big action entertainers are possible in Malayalam film industry, as well. The film, which is one of the most technically sound movies of recent times, did hit the bull's eye and has all the qualities to be tagged as one of the best movies of the year.
In fact, the year became special one for the industry as the audiences started accepting all kinds of films. When realistic movies like Kammatipaadam, Action Hero Biju, Maheshinte Prathikaaram etc., enjoyed success, mass entertainer like Pulimurugan, Kasaba etc., also enjoyed a grand run.
The upcoming Christmas releases have not been included to this list. The year-end-season is expected to be on a brighter side as Dulquer salmaan starrer Jomonte Suvisheshangal, Mohanlal starrer Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol, Prithviraj starrer Ezra and Jayasurya-Siddique team's Fukri etc., are expected to grace the theatres.
