From Cinematography To Direction, They Did Sail Smoothly!
Prithviraj's upcoming film James And Alice is all set to hit the theatres. The film has been directed by the prominent cinematographer Sujith Vaassudev who is making his debut as a director.
There are many other cinematographers in the industry who later turned towards film-making. Let us see some of the cinematographers turned directors of Malayalam Cinema.
Shaji N Karun
This list has to begin with him. Shaji N Karun made a name in the industry as a renowned cinematographer. He cranked the cameras for many of the G Aravindan films which got him many awards. Later, he debuted as a director through Piravi.
Santhosh Sivan
Nothing more has to be said about this magician who plays with visuals. Undeniably, he is the country's best cinematographer who started off with Malayalam films. His first Malayalam film as a director was Anandabhadram.
Venu
This National award-winning cinematographer became a director through Daya, which released in the year 1999. Later, he came back with Mammootty starrer Munnariyippu, which went on to receive wide critical acclaim.
Amal Neerad
Amal Neerad, who came into the Malayalam film industry as a cinematographer through the film Black, later wore the director's hat through the film Big B. From then on, he didn't have to look back as he turned out to be one of the most successful cinematographer turned directors.
Sameer Thahir
Sameer Thahir, started his career as a cinematographer, setting wonderful frames for Amal Neerad's Big B. Later, he debuted as a director through the film Chaapa Kurishu and then continued with quality films like Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi and Kali.
Rajeev Ravi
Rajeev Ravi made a name as the country's best cinematographer before venturing to direction. He debuted as a director through Annayum Rasoolum which broke many of the stereotypes in the industry. His upcoming film is the much awaited Dulquer Salmaan starrer Kammatti Paadam.
Jibu Jacob
Jibu Jacob who made a smashing debut as a director through Biju Menon starrer Vellimoonga is a renowned cinematographer in the film industry. Jibu Jacob is all set to start his next project which will have Mohanlal in the lead role.
Sujith Vaassudev has done a good number of films as a cinematographer. He has worked as a cinematographer in films like Drishyam, Memories, Anarkali, Amar Akbar Anthony etc.
This trend wasn't that common in the past. But, now cinematographers have shown their interest in film-making which is indeed a good sign.
Not everyone has been successful in their attempt. Renowned cinematographers like P Sukumar and Alagappan did try their hands at film-making through Swa Le and Pattom Pole respectively, but their attempt failed at the box office.
There was also a news that Jomon T John, who is one of the top cinematographers of Malayalam film industry is also planning to wear the director's hat. Reports say that he is planning a Dulquer Salmaan movie.
There are also reports that cinematographer Shaiju Khalid, who made the short film Sethulakshmi in the anthology movie Anju Sundarikal is also planning to make a full fledged movie soon.
