The time has come to say good bye to the year 2016 and it was an eventful one for the industry. Here, we take you through a quick recap of the year.
In a few hours of time, we all would be saying a good bye to the year 2016. The Malayalam cinema and its industry would definitely relish the prospects that the year offered.
As many as 118 Malayalam films hit the theatres in 2016 and the best part is in the fact that up to 25 films turned out to earn a hit tag at the box office.
The industry saw big films like Pulimurugan minting money at one end and small films like Happy Wedding and Aanandam turning out to be big hits, as well.

Star Of The Year - Mohanlal
The year was indeed a special one for this man. Mohanlal, once again proved his crowd-pulling capability with two big Malayalam films, that turned out to be big blockbusters. Oppam started off his dream run and it was followed by Pulimurugan. With two back-to-back blockbusters in Malayalam, the actor created some big box office records and is undoubtedly the star of the year.
Movie Of The Year - Pulimurugan
Well, this film went on to become the first ever Malayalam film to reach the elite 100 Crore club. The movie has opened a new arena for the Malayalam film industry and in its due course of journey, the film did script many box office records, which are seemingly hard to be broken.
Song Of The Year - Poomaram Song
As far as film songs are concerned, thaudiences got to hear some well composed songs. To pick a song is difficult, but yet, this song from Poomaram was the one that went on to become a big hit. The song, turned out to be a trendsetter, right after its release.
Big News Of The Year
There were some big news that really hogged the headlines. But, Dileep-Kavya Madhavan marriage came as a big surprise to many. The news regarding the marriage one of the most loved onscreen pairs of Mollywood was in the limelight for many days.
Actor Who Made A Mark - Dulquer Salmaan
The actor had just two releases in the form of Kali and Kammatipaadam and both these movies were high on quality. The actor came out of his comfort zone and proved his ability as a versatile actor. With each passing movies, he is improving as an actor and he is one such actor who is sure to make the year 2017 a special one.
Big Announcements
Mohanlal announced that his son would be making his debut as a lead actor with Jeethu Joseph's upcoming film. It came as a pleasant surprise to movie lovers. Actor Prithviraj also came up with an announcement regarding his directorial debut. The actor would call the shots for an upcoming film, Lucifer, which would feature Mohanlal in the lead role.
A Year Of Losses
The year 2016 was also a year of losses. Many prominent film personalities left us in this year, making 2016 a painful year. Celebrities like Kalpana, Kalabhavan Mani, Rajesh Pillai, ONV Kurup, Jishnu Raghavan, Sagar Shiyas etc., passed away in 2016.
But, the industry is not ending the year on a good note, as the recent film strike has left all the Malayalam film viewers angry and sad. No Malayalam movies hit the theatres during the Christmas season, leaving the year-end celebrations of film viewers incomplete.
Dulquer Salmaan starrer Jomonte Suisheshangal, Mohanlal starrer Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol, Prithviraj's Ezra and Jayasurya's Fukri were expected to be in the theatres during the year-end season. We hope that these films would make it to the theatres soon and start the year 2017 on a positive note.
