Malayalam
cinema
industry
has
always
been
fond
of
the
idea
of
sequels.
There
was
a
time
when
the
industry
was
flooded
with
sequels
and
makers
were
going
behind
the
idea
of
making
sequels
for
successful
films.
Here,
we
present
certain
Malayalam
movies
which
have
had
the
most
number
of
sequels.
These
are
the
films
or
franchises
which
have
had
atleast
three
parts.
CBI
Series
The
first
film
of
the
series
released
way
back
in
1988
and
the
film
totally
has
had
four
parts
in
the
form
of
Oru
CBI
Diary
Kurippu(1988),
Jagratha(1989),
Sethurama
Iyer
CBI(2003)
and
Nerariyan
CBI(2005).
The
fifth
installment
is
in
the
making
and
expectations
are
high
on
the
movie..
Nadodikkattu
Dasan
and
Vijayan
landed
in
our
hearts
through
Nadodikkaatu
which
released
in
1987.
Within
a
span
of
3
years,
the
film
went
on
to
have
2
sequels,
in
the
form
of
Pattanapravesham(1980)
and
Akkare
Akkare
Akkare(1990).
Audiences
are
eagerly
waiting
for
the
fourth
part
of
this
film.
Aavanazhi
The
film
Aavanazhi(1986)
brought
Inspector
Balram
to
the
scene.
The
success
of
the
movie
paved
way
for
a
sequel
named
Inspector
Balram(1991)
which
again
was
a
success.
In
2006,
another
film
named
Balram
V/S
Tharadas
got
released
which
was
a
crossover
film.
Ramji
Rao
Speaking
Ramji
Rao
Speaking
which
released
in
the
year
1989,
went
on
to
have
a
sequel
in
1995
through
the
film
Mannar
Mathai
Speaking.
In
2014,
a
film
named
Mannar
Mathai
Speaking
2
got
released
which
had
the
same
characters.
In
Harihar
Nagar
In
Harihar
Nagar
which
released
in
1990
has
had
two
sequels
so
far.
2
Harihar
Nagar(2009)and
In
Ghost
House
Inn(2010)
are
those
two
sequels
to
the
original.
All
the
three
were
big
successes
at
the
box-office.
Commissioner
Bharathchandran,
the
firebrand
Police
Officer
first
appeared
in
the
film
Commissioner
which
released
in
1994.
Later
in
2006,
Renji
Panikker
relaunched
the
character
for
the
film
Bharathchandran
IPS.
In
2012,
a
crossover
film
named
King
And
The
Commissioner
got
released,
which
had
Suresh
Gopi
essaying
the
same
character
Keerthichakra
We
saw
Major
Mahadevan
for
the
first
time
in
the
film
Keerthichakra(2007).
Later,
Major
Ravi
used
the
same
character
in
2
of
his
next
movies,
namely
Kurukshetra(2008)
and
Kandahar(2010).
Sequels
always
do
come
in
with
great
expectations.
Hence,
less
often
we
see
sequels
outperforming
the
prequel,
be
it
on
the
quality
side
or
even
the
box-office
collections.
But,
sequels
do
offer
a
good
prospect
for
film-makers.
It
offers
the
makers
a
perfect
platform
to
start
from.
The
above
said
expectation
helps
them
garner
good
collections
and
this
is
the
main
reason
why
sequels
are
still
in
demand
Of
late,
there
has
been
a
change
in
the
attitude.
With
the
new
generation
wave
hitting
the
industry,
we
haven't
seen
many
sequels
in
the
making
and
there
was
a
dip
in
the
demand
Recently,
we
heard
that
SN
Swamy,
Mammootty
and
K
Madhu
are
coming
together
for
the
fifth
installment
in
the
CBI
series.
The
CBI
series
is
one
of
the
most
coveted
franchises
in
Malayalam
cinema
and
this
might
well
bring
the
trend
back
to
track.
