Mohanlal 56th Birthday Special: A Blast From The Past

Mohanlal, the magical actor of Malayalam movie industry, is celebrating his 56th birthday today. The actor, who made his acting debut in 1978 with the movie Thiranottam, has completed 38 years in the industry.

He was born as the second child of Vishwanathan Nair and Santhakumari, at Elanthoor in Pathanamthitta district, on 21st May, 1960. Mohanlal had an elder brother named Pyarelal, who passed away in 2000.

Mohanlal was deeply interested in arts and sports from the childhood days. He received his first Best Actor trophy at the age of 12, for his performance in a school drama, named Computer Boy.

He was also the Kerala state wrestling champion of the year 1977-78. Mohanlal's debut movie Thiranottam remained unreleased for almost 25 years; thus Fazil's Manjil Virinja Pookal became his official onscreen debut.

The actor emerged as one of the leading actors of Malayalam movie industry by 1980's. He has acted in about 330 Malayalam films, and 13 other language films, in a career span of 38 years.

Mohanlal has received several awards; including 4 National Award trophies under various categories, 9 Filmfare trophies, 6 Kerala State Film Awards. The Nation has honoured him with Padma Shri, the fourth greatest civilian award of the country.
