Malayalam Films In Which 'Prison' Played An Important Part!

A new trend has hit Malayalam cinema.The story of prison or jail inmates have started to find acceptance among the film-makers.

Many of the recent Malayalam films have prison playing an important part in the film. Take a look at some of the Malayalam films from the past, which had prison playing an important part in them.

This film directed by Balu Mahendra did depict the life of a convict with cent percent conviction and believability. Mammootty played the lead role in this film scripted by John Paul. The movie was a runaway success and is still regarded as a classic.

Even though small, jail had an important role to play in New Delhi directed by Joshiy. The film starring Mammootty had many sequences which were shot originally in a central jail.

Mathilukal (1989)

Mathilukal was more of a love story, between a male convict and a female convict, who are separated by a wall. Directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan, the film fetched Mammootty his first National Award for the Best Actor.

Sadayam (1992)

Sadayam scripted by M T Vasudevan Nair and directed by Sibi Malayil, looked into the life of a convict named Sathyanathan, who was jailed under the charges of various murders. The movie which handled a very intense subject was much appreciated.

Kalapani (1996)

Kalapani, directed by Priyadarshan had narrated the life of prisoners of Kalapani, the cellular jail in Andaman And Nicobar Islands. By far, Kalapani is one of the best historical movies produced in Malayalam.

Prison and the life of its inmates have been featured in a number of Malayalam films. Films like Runway, which was a thorough entertainer had some interesting jail sequences delivered in an entertaining form.

The recently released trailer of Karinkunnam Sixes suggests that the film has jail and its inmates playing an important part in it. The film is said to be about a Volleyball coach played by Manju Warrier, who decides to form a team using jail inmates.

Another prison based film in the making is Welcome To Central Jail, which is said to be having majority of the portions shot in the jail. The film directed by Sunderdas and scripted by Benny P Nayarambalam has Dileep playing the lead role.

Recent movies like Munnariyippu and Urumbukal Urangarilla too, had jail playing an important part in it. Escape From Uganda, which had Rima Kallingal in the lead role, is one of the first jailbreak movies in Malayalam.
