What makes a road movie so popular among the masses? The answer is simple, these type of movies take you for a journey, making you think at times and anxious at other times.
Today, we are going to list some of the best road movies in Malayalam. Some of the films in this list also fall into the genre of a road thriller.
Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi
This film definitely falls into the genre of road movies. The film is about the journey of Kasi and Suni, covering various places. This journey, in turn brings in some changes in the outlooks of Kasi played by Dulquer Salmaan. This film directed by Sameer Thahir is the best example of a road movie.
Rani Padmini
Another movie that suits the genre perfectly. The film takes you through the journey of Rani and Padmini, and some encounters that they have while on the journey to Himachal Pradesh. The film directed by Aashiq Abu stayed true to the genre, but wasn't a big success at the box-office.
Veettilekkulla Vazhi
This film directed by Dr Biju is about a doctor who sets off for a journey with a kid, to find the latter's father. The film had a very strong content and won wide acclaim at various festival circuits.
Bhramaram
Bhramaram could be tagged as a thriller since the movie progresses with a lot of suspense factors. Bhramaram, talks about the mission of Sivankutty to bring back two of his old friends to his native place. The movie progresses as a road thriller for most of its duration.
Kali
Yet another movie, which could be categorized as a road thriller. The film starts off in a different fashion and with a shift in the second half, the film progresses as a road movie. The film directed by Sameer Thair has Dulquer Salmaan and Sai Pallavi in the lead roles.
Tamil and Hindi film industries have made proper use of this genre. Interestingly, Bollywood has produced good number of films which could be categorized as road movies.
But, there are only very few movies in Malayalam which could be called as a complete road movie. Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi, is one of the first full-length road movies released in Malayalam.
Rani Padmini, directed by Aashiq Abu with Manju Warrier and Rima Kallingal in the lead roles also falls into this genre.
It has to be noted that, many road movies were announced in the past. But, most of them failed to materialize owing to various reasons.
Interestingly, Malayalam cinema has witnessed more road thrillers than pure road movies. The movie Traffic, was kind of a road thriller, which dealt with a journey and a mission to be accomplished.
Vineeth Sreenivasan's debut production venture Anandham, which is being directed by Ganesh Raj, is said to be about a journey of college students in a bus.
