Nirakkoottu, the 1985-released crime thriller, still remains as one of the biggest successes in Mammootty's career. The megastar teamed up with one his most celebrated onscreen pairs, Sumalatha for Nirakkoottu, directed by Joshiy.
The movie, which was scripted by Dennis Joseph, dealt with the life of Ravi Varma, a prisoner who avenges the murder of his beloved wife Mercy. Mammootty appeared as Ravi, while Sumalatha essayed the role of Mercy.
Here we list the names of the actors, whom we feel are the perfect choices for the main star cast if Nirakkoottu is remade now....
Prithviraj As Ravi Varma
We feel that Prithviraj is the only actor from the current slot, who can do justice to the role of Ravi Varma, played by Mammootty in the original. The character of the rich advertising company owner, who is sentenced to death for murdering his pregnant wife Mercy, will be safe in Prithvi's hands.
Nayantara As Mercy Varghese
There is no better choice for Sumalatha's role Mercy Varghese, other than Nayantara. The character of the poor Malayali Christian girl, who turns into a model after losing her job and later marries her boss, is tailor-made for the star actress.
Mia George As Sasikala Varghese
Mia George will be a good choice for the role of the young journalist who publishes an investigative story about Ravi involvement in Mercy's murder, and is later revealed to be the latter's sister.
Srinda As Dr. Suma
The role of Dr. Suma, who treats the deeply injured Ravi Varma after he escapes from the prison, was played by Lissy in the original. If the movie is remade now, Srinda will be the correct choice for the role.
Aju Varghese As Ajith
The most unconventional choice for the role of the antagonist Ajith, played by Babu Namboothiri in the original. Ajith is a photographer, who hides a criminal brain behind his friendly, innocent face. We feel that Aju can do complete justice to this challenging role.
Mammootty's performance as Ravi Varma was widely appreciated by both the audiences and critics. The actor won a Special Jury Award at the Kerala State Film Awards of 1985, for his performance in Nirakkoottu.
The megastar also won the Filmfare Award South 1985 for the Best Actor, for his performance. KS Chithra, the veteran singer who sung the popular song Poomaname from the movie, won the Kerala State Award for Best Singer (Female).
Nirakkoottu was later remade into Tamil under the title Manithanin Marupakkam, with Sivakumar in the title role. The movie was also remade in Kannada as Sathya Jyothi, with Vishnuvardhan and Sumalatha in the lead roles.
