For sure, this Onam season won't be the same for Keralites and many will be skipping the celebrations as a mark of support to all those who have been affected by the massive floods. The year will be devoid of the Malayalam movies that usually add an extra flavour to the festival season of Onam and for which the audiences eagerly wait for even months before their actual release dates.
Importantly, the heavy lineup of Malayalam movies for the Onam season was expected to grace the theatres since August 17 onwards. The array of releases was expected to be inaugurated with the arrival of Biju Menon starrer Padayottam, which was initially scheduled to hit the theatres on August 17, 2018. Now, when will these Malayalam movies grace the big screens? Read on to know more about the same.
The Big Lineup
As many as 5 Malayalam movies were lined up for release during the Onam season of 2018. Biju Menon's Padayottam, Nivin Pauly's Kayamkulam Kochunni, Mammootty's Oru Kuttanadan Blog, Fahadh Faasil's Varatha and Tovino Thomas's Theevdandi, etc., were the films expected to release during the Onam season.
Now, it has been confirmed that none of these films will be in the theatres during the Onam season. According to a recent report by Times Of India, MC Bobby, who is the official of Film Exhibitors United Organization of Kerala (FEUOK), has stated that all the releases have been postponed.
The Release Plan
In the report, it has also been mentioned that the Kerala Film Chambers Of Commerce has called a meeting with the producers, exhibitors and distributors to find a proper slot for releasing these movies. MC Bobby has mentioned that they are planning to release one movie/week in the weeks to come.
At The Theatres
Meanwhile, some of the theatres across the state are functioning. The theatres are playing some of the previous Malayalam movie releases like Iblis, Oru Pazhaya Bomb Kadha, etc. Other language releases like Vishwaroopam 2, Gold, etc., too are in the theatres.
