Aashiq Abu Labels Unnikrishnan A Fake Leftist, Calls For Reform; Turmoil Erupts in FEFKA Following AMMA Crisis

Aashiq Abu Labels B Unnikrishnan Fake Leftist: The film industry in Kerala is currently grappling with significant turmoil following the release of the Hema Committee report, which has led to the exposure of a series of sexual harassment allegations against prominent figures in Malayalam cinema. The latest wave of unrest has now extended to the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA), the powerful organization representing film technicians and workers. Director and actor Aashiq Abu has publicly criticized the FEFKA leadership, specifically targeting its general secretary, director, and screenwriter, B. Unnikrishnan, for what he perceives as authoritarianism and deceitful practices.
Aashiq Abu, known for his bold stance on various issues within the industry, has accused B. Unnikrishnan of wielding disproportionate control over FEFKA, effectively transforming the union into a feudal labor organization. Abu's sharp remarks come in the wake of the recent dissolution of the executive body of AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists), where all members, including President Mohanlal, resigned following mounting pressure and controversy.
In his criticism, Aashiq Abu described Unnikrishnan's leadership style as "authoritarian" and accused him of projecting a "fake leftist persona" to mislead both the industry and the Kerala government. Aashiq argued that the official statement released by FEFKA in response to the AMMA crisis was not representative of the union's collective stance but rather a reflection of Unnikrishnan's personal views. He called for Unnikrishnan to be removed from the state's film policy formulation committee, asserting that his presence on the policy formulation committee is harmful to the development of the film industry.
Aashiq Abu's accusations against Unnikrishnan also extended to allegations of employment denial and manipulation within the union. He urged Unnikrishnan to publicly address the concerns raised, challenging him to face the scrutiny of society rather than operate from behind closed doors. According to Aashiq, Unnikrishnan has consistently engaged in regressive practices that have stifled the voices of workers within FEFKA.
FEFKA's Response To AMMA Crisis
FEFKA had previously issued a statement following the mass resignation of AMMA's executive members, suggesting that the resignations should be seen as the beginning of a renewal process within the organization. FEFKA also called for transparency regarding the individuals mentioned in the Hema Committee report, which investigates sexual misconduct within the industry. However, the organization refrained from making further comments, citing the ongoing judicial proceedings in the High Court.
In addition to calling for reforms, FEFKA announced its commitment to providing legal assistance to survivors of harassment. The core committee of FEFKA has been tasked with this responsibility, and the organization has pledged to offer the services of a clinical psychologist to those in need. FEFKA also promised that any members accused of misconduct would face appropriate action, regardless of their status within the organization.
The Hema Committee report, considered one of the most crucial documents in the history of Indian cinema, continues to be a focal point of discussion within FEFKA. The organization has scheduled meetings for September 2, 3, and 4 to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the report. FEFKA emphasized that it seeks to approach the situation with maturity and a thorough understanding rather than resorting to impulsive or emotional reactions.
Meanwhile, the developments within FEFKA signal a potential shift in the landscape of Malayalam cinema as key figures like Aashiq Abu push for greater accountability and reform within the industry. With the ongoing controversies and the fallout from the Hema Committee report, the coming days are likely to be critical for both FEFKA and the broader film community in Kerala.
