M.T. Vasudevan Nair Passes Away: Renowned Malayalam writer M.T. Vasudevan Nair passed away at the age of 91 on Wednesday. According to a report by Asianet News, he succumbed to age-related health issues at a private hospital in Kozhikode, where he had been receiving treatment for the past 11 days. He passed away around 10:10 PM. His health had been deteriorating due to heart disease and respiratory complications, ultimately leading to a cardiac arrest. Today, his kidney and heart functions failed, marking the end of an illustrious life.
M.T. Vasudevan Nair, fondly known as M.T., had faced recurring health challenges in recent months. Over the past month, he had been admitted to the hospital several times. His most recent hospitalization occurred on December 15, following severe respiratory distress. Medical experts had been closely monitoring his condition, and a special team was formed to manage his treatment. On Tuesday, hospital authorities issued a bulletin stating that his condition had become critical due to cardiac arrest. Despite their efforts, his health continued to decline.
At the time of his passing, his immediate family, including his wife and daughter, were by his side. M.T. Vasudevan Nair leaves behind a rich legacy as one of Malayalam literature's greatest storytellers. His works have touched countless hearts, and his contributions to literature and cinema will be remembered for generations to come. The loss of this literary giant marks the end of an era in Malayalam literature, cinema, and culture.
The Kerala state government has declared official mourning on December 26th and 27th in tribute to M.T. Vasudevan Nair. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has directed the postponement of all government activities, including the cabinet meeting that was set for December 26th. The funeral service will be held on the evening of December 26th at 5 PM at Mavoor Public Cemetery.

M.T. Vasudevan Nair was a towering figure in Malayalam literature, making significant contributions across various genres such as novels, short stories, screenplays, plays, children's literature, essays, and travelogues. His work as a writer and editor remains unmatched. Additionally, M.T. directed six films, including Nirmalyam, which is regarded as a classic in Malayalam cinema, as well as two documentaries. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2005 and received several prestigious honors, including the Jnanpith Award, Kerala Jyothi, Ezhuthachan Award, Vayalar Award, Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award, Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, Vallathol Award, and J.C. Daniel Award.
M.T. Vasudevan Nair's exceptional contributions to Malayalam cinema were widely recognized with numerous accolades throughout his career. He won the National Film Award for Best Film for Nirmalyam in 1973 and the National Film Award for Best Screenplay multiple times, including for Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha (1989), Kadavu (1991), Sadayam (1992), and Parinayam (1994). His work also earned him the Kerala State Film Award for Best Screenplay on several occasions, starting with Olavum Theeravum in 1970 and continuing with films like Nirmalyam (1973), Amrutham Gamaya (1987), Perumthachan (1990), and Pazhassi Raja (2009). M.T. also garnered multiple Kerala State Film Awards for Best Film and Best Director, including for Nirmalyam (1973), Kadavu (1991), and Oru Cheru Punchiri (2000). His work was not only celebrated for its artistic value but also for its social relevance and historical significance. He is survived by his wife, Kalamandalam Saraswathi; their daughter, Ashwathi; and his daughter, Sithara, from a previous marriage.
