Mohanlal Breaks Silence On Barroz Box Office Failure: This Is Not For Money

Mohanlal's directorial debut Barroz has received mixed reviews and modest box office earnings. Released exclusively in 3D, it embodies his dedication to offering audiences a unique cinematic experience, despite criticisms of its narrative.

Mohanlal, a celebrated figure in the Malayalam film industry, recently ventured into directing with "Barroz," a fantasy thriller that has garnered mixed reactions and modest earnings at the box office. Despite these outcomes, Mohanlal remains hopeful, viewing the project as a labor of love dedicated to his admirers.

Speaking to India Today Digital, he shared his thoughts on the film's performance and the strategic choice to release it exclusively in 3D format. Mohanlal elaborated, "We've released only 3D prints, and that was the best decision. People ask, 'Why didn't you also have a 2D [version]?' But why should we? People should enjoy this experience first, and if it's necessary, we have 2D prints available as well. So, this is not [for] the number or the money. I want to make something and give it to the audience. This is a gift for them, for their respect and love [they have given] for the last 47 years. This is a gift, an offering from me to them. I have given a children-friendly film that families can watch together. It will also tickle the child in you."

"Barroz," starring Mohanlal along with Maya Rao West, Cesar Lorente Raton, Ignacio Mateos, Kallirroi Tziafeta, Nerea Camacho, and Tuhin Menon, embarked on a journey that spanned over six years and required 1,650 days of effort. Despite its ambitious scope and the inclusion of a significant ensemble cast and crew, the film has been criticized for its superficial narrative, as reflected in its box office tally. Initially, the movie earned Rs 3.45 crore on its opening day, but interest waned, with total earnings reaching Rs 8.75 crore after five days. The Hindi version, released in theaters on December 25, also struggled to make a strong impression.

Mohanlal's debut directorial effort reflects his commitment to offering audiences something novel, emphasizing the importance of the creative process over monetary gain. He stated, "This is an association of great actors and great technicians. We tried something different [that] nobody has attempted [yet]. It's not a challenge but a new experience for the audience." His perspective underscores his dedication to cinema and willingness to explore uncharted territories for the sake of providing a unique viewing experience.

Despite the film's underwhelming box office performance, Mohanlal's confidence in "Barroz" as a singular cinematic experience remains unshaken. He continues to prioritize the artistic integrity of his work above its commercial outcomes. With a career spanning nearly five decades, Mohanlal's journey from an acclaimed actor to a director showcases his versatility and unwavering passion for filmmaking. Fans and followers of the actor-director are keen to see where his creative pursuits will take him next, as he remains a formidable presence in Indian cinema.

To conclude, Mohanlal's directorial debut with "Barroz" highlights his optimism and resilience in the face of mixed reviews and modest box office results. His decision to release the film only in 3D, his dedication to providing audiences with a unique experience, and his view of the film as a heartfelt gift to his fans illustrate his enduring commitment to his craft and his audience's enjoyment. As Mohanlal looks forward to his next project, it is clear that his passion for cinema and his desire to innovate will continue to guide his career.
