What Is The Hema Committee Report? Key Insights On The Challenges Faced By Women in Malayalam Cinema

What Is the Hema Committee Report

Hema Committee Report: The long-awaited Hema Committee report on the Malayalam film industry has been officially released. The Cultural Ministry of Kerala provided copies to eight individuals under the Right to Information (RTI) Act. Spanning 233 pages, the report examines systemic issues and abuses faced by women in the industry, highlighting the prevalence of misogyny. While offering detailed insights, it excludes personal information to protect privacy.

Key Findings in the Report

Led by retired Justice K. Hema, the report was commissioned to address rising complaints about the mistreatment of women in Malayalam cinema. Key issues highlighted include the dominance of criminals, the prevalence of the casting couch, and the treatment of female artists as second-class citizens. Despite numerous complaints, no significant actions have been taken, exacerbating these problems.

The report reveals widespread sexual exploitation and coercion, with some major figures in the industry involved in perpetuating these abuses. Agents are also reportedly involved in sexual exploitation. The report criticizes the industry's culture of silence, affecting both women and men. Witnesses fear severe backlash and social media attacks, which discourage reporting abuses.

The report states that Malayalam cinema is controlled by a few individuals who intimidate Internal Complaints Committees. There is a prevailing public perception in the industry that women are expected to be submissive. The common belief is that women enter the film industry for money and fame, with the notion that actresses are expected to share beds with others. The report also notes that if someone is considered a dissenter, these figures will exclude them from future projects.

The report highlights the dire conditions for junior artists, who work long hours without proper compensation or facilities. Due to the lack of facilities for urination, women on set are forced to avoid drinking water. Many women suffer from urinary infections.

The report emphasizes the need for an independent grievance redressal system, as previously recommended by the Hema Committee four and a half years ago. The current system, limited to Internal Complaints Committees, is deemed inadequate.

Key sections of the report, including paragraph 96 on page 49 and parts from pages 81 to 100, as well as paragraphs 165 to 196, have been omitted to safeguard privacy and confidentiality. The report's findings are expected to ignite intense debate and drive much-needed reforms in the industry.
