AMMA Elections 2025: Nomination Process Underway; Major Shift Expected — Who Will Replace Mohanlal?

AMMA Elections 2025 Who Will Replace Mohanlal

AMMA Elections 2025: The Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) is preparing for a significant leadership transition with its upcoming elections scheduled for August 15, 2025. This shift comes after superstar Mohanlal confirmed he would not be contesting for the president's post, paving the way for a new phase in the organization's history.

According to the Times of India, nominations for the elections opened on July 17, and 17 positions are up for grabs, including six key office-bearer roles such as president, two vice presidents, general secretary, joint secretary, treasurer, and 11 seats on the executive committee, in which four are reserved for women. As per Mathrubhumi, candidates can submit their nominations between 10 am and 4 pm each day until July 24. The verified list of candidates is expected to be released on July 31, after the scrutiny process concludes.

With Mohanlal stepping aside, attention has turned to who might succeed him. Times of India reports that two names have emerged prominently: actor Kunchacko Boban, representing the younger generation, and veteran actor Vijayaraghavan, who is widely respected among senior members. Sources suggest that if Vijayaraghavan officially enters the race, he could secure the post unopposed.

For the position of general secretary, actor Baburaj is reportedly preparing to contest, while actress Shwetha Menon, a former office bearer, is also being speculated as a possible candidate, although her participation is yet to be confirmed.

AMMA Set for Leadership Transition Amid High Interest and Ongoing Scrutiny

The elections are being closely watched by industry insiders and observers, especially given the backdrop of recent events. As Manorama Online notes, the previous executive committee resigned on August 27 last year following allegations of sexual harassment involving some members of the organization. An ad hoc committee has since been in charge and will remain so until the election results are finalized.

Despite earlier resistance from the general body to holding elections, Mohanlal reportedly advocated strongly in favor of democratic transition. He is said to have encouraged the inclusion of younger members and women in leadership, emphasizing the need for change and moral accountability.

Take a Poll

Several prominent actors and former executive members are reportedly considering contesting in the election, including Tovino Thomas, Tini Tom, Vinu Mohan, Kalabhavan Shajohn, Jayan Cherthala, and Suresh Krishna, signaling participation from both senior and emerging voices in the industry.

According to Mathrubhumi, eligibility to contest is limited to AMMA life members who have cleared all dues by March 31 and are not office-bearers in any other film-related associations. With the field wide open and significant interest from various quarters, the 2025 AMMA elections are poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the organization's future.
