AMMA Elections 2025 Update: No Mohanlal, No Mammootty — Here's Who's In The Race For President

AMMA Elections 2025: The upcoming elections for the executive committee of AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists) are shaping up to be a high-stakes affair, even as some of Malayalam cinema's most recognizable figures remain absent from the candidate list. A total of 74 candidates have filed nominations for various posts, including six vying for the role of president.
According to reports, the nomination process closed on Thursday, after which 64 candidates were declared eligible following preliminary scrutiny. Among the key developments is the contest for the president's post, which has drawn six contenders: Jagadish, Shwetha Menon, Ravindran, Devan, Jayan Cherthala, and Anoop Chandran. Jagadish previously served as vice president in the outgoing committee.
Top Stars Stay Away as AMMA Gears Up for Leadership Polls
The election, scheduled for August 15, is taking place at a time when several prominent members of the Malayalam film industry, including Mohanlal, Mammootty, and Suresh Gopi, have opted to stay out of the fray. Mohanlal, who served as AMMA president for the past three terms following Innocent's death, formally declined to seek re-election despite requests from the ad hoc committee to continue.
According to a report by Deshabhimani, five candidates are contesting for the post of general secretary: Baburaj, Anoop Chandran, Kukku Parameswaran, Jayan Cherthala, and Ravindran. There are nine candidates, including Navya Nair, for the two vice president positions; 13 for joint secretary; nine for treasurer; eight candidates for the four women's reserved seats in the 11-member executive; and 14 for the remaining seven posts. Actor Joy Mathew's nomination was rejected following a scrutiny of submitted documents.
This election cycle also sees broader participation from younger members and more women, according to reports. Several individuals have filed nominations for more than one position, and around 25 candidates are believed to be actively in the fray. In total, the election will determine a 17-member governing body, comprising 11 executive committee members and six office bearers. Former committee members Ansiba, Tini Tom, and Vinu Mohan, who stepped down last year, are also contesting for various posts.
As reported by Twenty Four News, this election follows the resignation of AMMA's previous executive committee nearly a year ago, prompted by a series of allegations and controversies. The fallout from the Hema Committee report was a key factor in the committee's dissolution.
The final list of candidates will be confirmed after the withdrawal deadline on July 31. With several familiar faces stepping back and new contenders entering the scene, the upcoming election marks a transitional phase for AMMA, as the organization prepares to elect a new leadership team under increased member and public scrutiny.
