Chotta Mumbai Re-release Box Office Collection: The 2007 Malayalam action-comedy film Chotta Mumbai, featuring Mohanlal in the lead, has returned to theaters with a digitally remastered 4K Dolby Atmos version. The movie was re-released on June 6, 2025. According to industry tracker AB George, the film has grossed approximately ₹3.40 crore in its 10-day run in Kerala. This marks Mohanlal's fourth theatrical re-release to perform well at the box office. His earlier films Spadikam, Manichitrathazhu, and Devadoothan had also reportedly drawn audiences during their re-releases.
Helmed by Anwar Rasheed and penned by Benny P. Nayarambalam, Chotta Mumbai originally hit theaters in April 2007 and became a commercial success upon release. Produced by Maniyanpilla Raju along with Ajayachandran Nair and Raghuchandran Nair, the film quickly earned cult status among fans for its comedic timing, memorable characters, and its portrayal of Kochi's street culture.
Chotta Mumbai: A Tale of Vasco and His Gang in Fort Kochi
The plot revolves around Vasco da Gama, also known as "Thala," a carefree small-time gang leader in Fort Kochi. Alongside his loyal group of friends-Mullan Chandrappan, Padakkam Basheer, Tomichan, Sainu, and Susheelan-Vasco gets entangled in a series of misadventures that begin with a failed attempt to go abroad using fraudulent visas. This sets off a chain of events that brings him into conflict with corrupt police officer Nadeshan and his brother Satheesan.
The narrative blends comedy, action, and emotion, particularly in the second half, where the stakes grow higher. Vasco must not only clear his gang's name after they are wrongfully implicated in a murder case but also save his mortgaged family home and restore his strained relationship with his father, Michael Asan, a respected retired wrestler.
The film's climactic sequence is set against the backdrop of the Cochin Carnival, adding local flavor and cultural resonance. Vasco and his team use the occasion to expose Nadeshan and settle scores, bringing the story to a high-energy conclusion.
The cast includes several well-known Malayalam cinema figures. Apart from Mohanlal in the central role, the film features Kalabhavan Mani as CI Nadeshan, Bhavana as Latha, Vasco's eventual love interest, and Sai Kumar as Michael Asan. Supporting roles are played by Siddique, Jagathy Sreekumar, Indrajith Sukumaran, Manikuttan, Bijukuttan, Rajan P. Dev, and others. The ensemble also includes appearances by Cochin Haneefa, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Maniyanpilla Raju, Mallika Sukumaran, Bheeman Raghu, Vijayaraghavan, Baburaj, and Vinayakan. The film also features cameo appearances by Shakeela, who plays herself, and Rachana Maurya, who appears as a dancer in the popular song "Vasco da Gama."
The music for Chotta Mumbai was composed by Rahul Raj, marking his debut in film scoring. The soundtrack played a key role in the film's original popularity, and the re-release has seen a revival of interest in its songs and background score.
The 2025 re-release arrives amid a broader wave of reviving older films for new audiences, combining nostalgic appeal with improved audiovisual presentation. The decision to bring back Chotta Mumbai in 4K and Dolby Atmos reflects this shift in Malayalam cinema, where digitally restored versions of popular titles are being reintroduced to theaters.
AB George, a known box office tracker, reported the ₹3.4 crore gross for the Kerala box office in the film's first 10 days. This indicates sustained interest from audiences, particularly Mohanlal fans and those who hold the film in high regard for its mix of humor, action, and emotion.
Chotta Mumbai's performance on re-release underscores the enduring popularity of certain titles within the Malayalam film industry and reflects the continued audience support for legacy films when offered with technical upgrades. Whether this success leads to further re-releases of similar cult favorites remains to be seen, but the film's 2025 theatrical run has certainly reaffirmed its place in Kerala's popular film culture.
