Detective Ujjwalan OTT Deal: Malayalam mystery comedy Detective Ujjwalan, the latest offering from the makers of Minnal Murali, is reportedly set to arrive on a streaming platform following its theatrical release on May 23, 2025. According to reports, the film's post-theatrical digital and satellite rights have been finalized.

Netflix has reportedly acquired the film's digital rights, adding another Malayalam title to its catalog in recent months. According to an industry update shared by film tracker AB George on X (formerly Twitter), the streaming platform was drawn to the film as it serves as the second installment in the Weekend Cinematic Universe (WCU), which began with the 2021 superhero film Minnal Murali. An official announcement from Netflix is awaited. Zee has reportedly secured the satellite broadcasting rights, as per the same update.

Second Film in Weekend Cinematic Universe

Produced by Sophia Paul under the Weekend Blockbusters banner, Detective Ujjwalan is the second installment in the WCU. The film features Dhyan Sreenivasan in the titular role, alongside Siju Wilson and Rony David Raj. The supporting cast includes Kottayam Nazeer, Seema G. Nair, Ameen, Nihal Nizam, Nibraz Noushad, Shahubas, Kalabhavan Navas, and Nirmal Palazhi.

Directed and written by Indraneel Gopeekrishnan and Rahul G., Detective Ujjwalan blends mystery and comedy, set against the backdrop of a fictional investigation. The narrative, though comedic in tone, unfolds through a chain of unpredictable events and character interactions in a small-town Kerala setting.

Production and Crew

Filming began in November 2024, with the majority of the shoot taking place across several locations in Palakkad district, including Kollengode, Nenmara, Shoranur, and Pattambi. Principal photography wrapped in December 2024.

The cinematography is handled by Prem Akkattu and Sraiyanti, with editing by Chaman Chakko. Rzee and Sibi Mathew Alex worked on the film's soundtrack and background score. Lyrics were penned by Vinayak Sasikumar and Manu Manjith. Sound design was carried out by Sync Cinema, and action choreography by Thavasi Raj. The film's visual effects were managed by I-VFX and the DI work was completed by Poetic.

Awaiting Official Streaming Date

While Netflix is reportedly confirmed as the digital partner, an official announcement and the date of the OTT premiere have not yet been disclosed. The digital launch is expected to attract a wider audience.
