ED Conducts Raids At Multiple Premises Linked To Empuraan Producer And Businessman Gokulam Gopalan

ED Searches Properties of Empuraan Producer: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday conducted raids at multiple premises linked to well-known businessman and film producer Gokulam Gopalan. The searches, which began earlier in the day, reportedly took place at five locations across Kerala and Tamil Nadu, including his corporate establishments in Kozhikode and a chit fund office in Kodambakkam, Chennai.
The ED is reportedly probing alleged violations under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). According to a report by Asianet News, the investigation could involve alleged foreign exchange irregularities amounting to ₹1,000 crore.
The agency has also expanded its investigation to cover potential financial fraud allegedly involving the Gokulam Chit Fund. Authorities are expected to examine other locations where companies in which Gopalan serves as a director have made investments. Officials are also investigating whether shell companies may have been used. Transactions involving foreign entities are reportedly under scrutiny for possible FEMA violations.
In Kozhikode, the ED team arrived at the Gokulam Grand Corporate Office in Arayidathupalam around 11:30 AM. The officials reportedly arrived in unmarked taxi vehicles. Searches were later extended to Gokulam Mall. A separate team is believed to be handling operations in Tamil Nadu.
ED Raids Follow as Gokulam Gopalan Co-Produces Empuraan
The raids have sparked considerable discussion, particularly in light of Gokulam Gopalan's recent involvement in the controversial Malayalam film Empuraan. Gopalan joined the project as one of the producers after a financial dispute arose between Aashirvad Cinemas and Lyca Productions.
Since its release, Empuraan has faced pressure from right-wing groups, who have accused the film of misrepresenting the 2002 Gujarat riots. The film also encountered legal challenges for allegedly using the emblem of the National Investigation Agency without permission. A scene widely interpreted as a reference to the Bilkis Bano case also drew sharp criticism, further fueling the debate over the film's political undertones. Despite the controversy, the film continues to spark discussions about its portrayal of sensitive issues and its impact on public discourse.
With the ED now investigating Gopalan's financial dealings, the ongoing situation has reignited discussions on freedom of expression in the country, especially in the context of popular cinema.
