Empuraan: Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan Criticizes Backlash Against Mohanlal's Movie, Defends Creative Freedom

Kerala CM Criticizes Backlash Against Mohanlal s Empuraan

Kerala CM Addresses Controversy Over Empuraan: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has responded to the backlash surrounding the film Empuraan, emphasizing the need to protect artistic freedom. In a statement shared on his official social media handle, he expressed concern over what he described as attempts to suppress creative voices through coercion and intimidation.

"The hate campaign against Empuraan and its creators is deeply disturbing. This is yet another example of a growing pattern where coercion and intimidation are used to silence dissent-tactics that have always been hallmarks of authoritarianism," Vijayan stated.

His remarks come amid controversy over Empuraan, the sequel to Lucifer, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and starring Mohanlal. Some groups, including the RSS-affiliated publication Organizer, have accused the film of presenting a one-sided depiction of the 2002 Gujarat riots and promoting an anti-Hindu political agenda. There have also been calls to revoke Mohanlal's honorary rank of lieutenant colonel in the Indian Army due to his involvement in the project.

Vijayan underscored the importance of safeguarding creative expression, cautioning against the suppression of artistic voices. "Undermining creative freedom through fear and threats strikes at the very core of democracy. Freedom of expression is a fundamental right; we must stand united to defend it," he added.

Following the controversy, the makers of Empuraan announced modifications to the film, with Mohanlal expressing regret over any distress caused and confirming that certain politically sensitive elements would be removed. This development has sparked a broader discussion on the balance between artistic integrity and political sensitivities, with varying opinions on whether external pressure should influence creative content.

Empuraan: A Political Action Thriller

Empuraan, the sequel to Lucifer, continues the story of Khureshi Ab'raam / Stephen Nedumpally, played by Mohanlal, delving into themes of power, politics, and personal conflicts. Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and written by Murali Gopy, the film features an ensemble cast, including Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, and international actors such as Jerome Flynn and Eriq Ebouaney. The film also marks a technical milestone as the first Malayalam movie to release in IMAX. While it has sparked debate over its political themes, Empuraan has drawn significant attention in both industry and audience discussions.
