Empuraan Is Mollywood's Highest-Grosser Now: Mohanlal finally did it, and again. The veteran who gave the first industry record for Mollywood beat his own to deliver another, after nine long years. His latest political action-thriller Empuraan, Lucifer movie's sequel and the second part of the Lucifer series, became the highest-grossing Mollywood industry hit by beating the all-time collection Manjummel Boys. The Prithviraj Sukumaran's directorial film managed to achieve this feat amid controversies and mixed reactions. Murali Gopy wrote the film's story, which was released worldwide to record-setting numbers on March 27. Fans are celebrating the big win of their Lalettan that came after a long time.

Despite allegations and mixed reviews that tormented Mohanlal's Empuraan box office in other languages, the original version is shaking the box office and made Rs 250 Crore within just 10 days. The movie is now the biggest grosser officially. Mohanlal took to his socials to share the joy with his fans in which he thanked them. He wrote, #L2E #Empuraan now reigns as the highest-grossing film in Malayalam cinema history.

5 Out Of 10 Mollywood Industry Hits Are On Mohanlal

Among the Mollywood industry hits since 2000, Mohanlal has five films including Empuraan. His Narasimham (2000), Twenty20 (2008) (co-starring Mammootty and Suresh Gopi), Drishyam (2013) and Pulimurugan (2016) are the previous highest-grossers of Kerala film industry. Since 1980, Mohanlal delivered the highest and biggest industry hits for Malayalam film industry. The actor headed as many as 11 projects from 1980 and among them, five are after the year 2000.

The list includes Irupatham Nootand (1987), Chithram (1988), Kilukkam (1991), Manichithrathazhu (1993), and Aaram Thampuran (1997).

Empuraan Production & Scale

Made on a budget of Rs 180 Crore, the movie which was one of the very few costliest films of Mollywood made Rs 250 Crore even before completing two full weekends at the box office in India. Along with the Malayalam version, the movie's box office performance in the Gulf region and other overseas destinations are bringing good numbers.

Empuraan was conceived during the pandemic and unit filmed across Kerala, Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Faridabad, Haryana, Shimla, Ladakh, New York, New Mexico, Lousiana, Atlanta, The UK, and UAE. Empuraan is also the first film of Mollywood to have been shot across tens of different locations spread across different continents. The filming of Lucifer 2 was completed in just 145 days, 28 days before the allotted time schedule. In addition, both Prithviraj Sukumaran and Mohanlal didn't take remuneration for the film and opted for profit share with every penny being spent on the making itself.

The action-thriller's cinematography was handled by Sujith Vaassudev and edited by Akhilesh Mohan. Deepak Dev composed the film's entire music and sound. Murali Gopy wrote the movie's story and script.
