Malayalam Film Industry Imposes Anti-Drug Rules; Actors & Filmmakers To Sign ‘No Drug Use’ Declaration

The Malayalam Film Producers Association has mandated an affidavit for all individuals in film production to pledge against drug use. This initiative aims to foster a drug-free environment and prevent production disruptions. The decision aligns with a broader commitment to addressing drug-related concerns within the industry.

The Film Producers Association has introduced a new requirement for the Malayalam film industry. Starting June 26, all individuals involved in film production, from drivers to stars, must sign an affidavit pledging not to use drugs during filming. This initiative coincides with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Reports of drug use among industry members, including actors like Shine Tom Chacko and Sreenath Bhasi, have prompted this action. The affidavit covers shooting locations, residences during filming, and post-production sites. The association aims to create a drug-free environment on set.

Industry-Wide Agreement

According to an IANS report, the Producers Association has secured agreement from all sectors of the Malayalam film industry for this measure. This decision follows discussions with various stakeholders. The goal is to prevent disruptions caused by drug-related incidents and ensure smooth production processes.

Authorities have conducted searches at filming sites due to drug abuse cases, leading to delays in production. These disruptions have primarily affected producers, prompting the association to enforce this rule strictly.

Actors' Association Meeting

An anonymous top Malayalam actor revealed that the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) might discuss this issue at their upcoming annual general body meeting. The actor mentioned being unaware of the new affidavit due to ongoing shooting commitments but acknowledged its media coverage.

"At the moment, since I am busy at the shooting location, I am not aware of this new affidavit. Maybe it might have been announced. Anyway, now that this has surfaced in the media, this issue is certain to be taken up for discussion on Sunday at our meeting and definitely, that will be our decision too," the actor said.

Addressing Drug-Related Concerns

The initiative aims to address concerns about drug use within the industry comprehensively. Recent arrests of behind-the-scenes workers, including drivers and stunt artists, highlight the issue's prevalence. By implementing this measure, the association seeks to maintain a professional and safe working environment for everyone involved in filmmaking.
