Mankombu Gopalakrishnan Passes Away: Renowned lyricist Mankombu Gopalakrishnan, aged 78, passed away at a private hospital in Kochi at 5 PM following a heart attack. He had been receiving treatment in the hospital for the past week due to physical ailments. Known for his remarkable contribution to Malayalam music, Gopalakrishnan's legacy spans several decades, having penned countless songs that became integral to Kerala's musical landscape.
Born in the village of Mankombu in Alappuzha district, Gopalakrishnan made his debut in the Malayalam film industry with the 1971 film Vimochanasamaram. His breakthrough came in 1975 with the film Ayalathe Sundari, directed by Hariharan, where his songs, including the popular "Laksharchana Kandu Madangumbol," gained widespread attention. This marked the beginning of a fruitful collaboration with the director, with whom he worked on numerous films over the years.
After Ayalathe Sundari, Gopalakrishnan penned lyrics for films such as Lady Teacher and Babumon. His work includes iconic songs like "Aashada Masam Aathmavil Moham," "Nadanpattinte Madisheela Kilungumi," and "Ilanmanjil Kulimayoru." Over the course of his career, he wrote lyrics for hundreds of films, leaving an indelible mark on the Malayalam music industry.
Gopalakrishnan's Contributions as a Producer, Editor, and Screenwriter
In addition to his work as a lyricist, Gopalakrishnan co-produced the film 'Poomadathe Pennu' and also contributed as the editor of Anveshanam, a magazine published from Madras. His creative reach extended beyond songwriting, as he was also credited with writing the story and screenplay for several films, adding depth to his versatile career.
Known for his prolific partnership with director Hariharan, Gopalakrishnan penned some of his most beloved songs under Hariharan's direction. His collaboration with legendary music director MS Viswanathan is also celebrated. Furthermore, Gopalakrishnan gained recognition for translating numerous films from other languages into Malayalam, including the monumental Baahubali.
Mankombu Gopalakrishnan's passing marks the end of an era in Malayalam cinema. His legacy, however, lives on through the songs he crafted and the films he shaped.
