Marco Faces Broadcast Ban: CBFC Blocks TV Screening, OTT Removal Likely Amid Rising Concerns Over Violence

Marco Faces Broadcast Ban CBFC Blocks TV Screening

CBFC Bans TV Broadcast of 'Marco,' OTT Future Uncertain: The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has imposed a ban on the television broadcast of the Malayalam neo-noir action thriller Marco, citing excessive violent content. The move has also raised concerns about the film's availability on OTT platforms, as the board has sought intervention from the Centre to potentially restrict its digital screening as well.

According to a report by Manorama News, CBFC Regional Officer Nadeem Thufali T has written to the board's chairperson, urging regulatory action against the film's release on streaming platforms. The controversy stems from the film's graphic violence, which has already earned it an 'A' (Adults Only) certification from the CBFC.

Speaking to Manorama News, Thufali stated, "Marco has already been certified for adult viewing. Parents should be cautious when allowing children access to such films. The CBFC's responsibility is to certify films, not censor them, but we have deemed it unsuitable for family audiences and therefore rejected its satellite rights for television broadcast."

The decision follows growing concerns over the portrayal of violence in media and its influence on the rise in violent crimes in Kerala. The issue was recently highlighted by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who, during an adjournment motion in the Assembly, expressed apprehension about the glorification of violence in films and television serials. He warned that such content could have a detrimental effect on young audiences and contribute to rising crime rates.

Marco's Success and Violent Content Under Scrutiny

Directed by Haneef Adeni, Marco features Unni Mukundan in the titular role, supported by actors Siddique, Jagadish, Kabir Duhan Singh, Abhimanyu Shammi Thilakan, Anson Paul, Ishaan Shoukath, and Yukti Thareja. The film, produced by Shareef Muhammed under Cubes Entertainments and Unni Mukundan Films, was released in theaters on December 20, 2024, coinciding with Christmas. Despite its graphic nature, Marco achieved massive commercial success, becoming the highest-grossing A-rated Malayalam film and securing a spot among the top ten highest-grossing Malayalam films of all time.

The film later premiered on SonyLIV on February 14, 2025, in multiple languages, including Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada. Initially, an extended and uncut version was planned for streaming, but after complaints reached the Ministry of Broadcasting, only the theatrical version was made available.

With CBFC's latest move, Marco now faces an uncertain future in the digital space. If the Centre intervenes as recommended, the film may be removed from OTT platforms, adding another layer of controversy to its release. The debate over violence depicted in media continues to intensify, with authorities closely scrutinizing the impact of such films on society.
