Noted Malayalam Singer P Jayachandran Passes Away At The Age Of 80

Noted Malayalam singer P Jayachandran passes away at the age of 80. According to the reports, the singer breathed his last at Amala hospital in Thrissur, Kerala. The beloved singer, who takes the credit for recording more than 1600 songs, spanning over multiple languages, was undergoing treatment for sometime now. The reports further suggested that the singer was suffering from cancer for last few years, which is the possible cause of death.

P Jayachandran was born on March 3, 1944, in Ravipuram, Kochi to the descendant of Cochin Royal Family, late Ravivarma Kochaniyan Thampuran, who was also a musician, and the late Paliyath Subhadrakkunjamma. Since childhood, Jayachandran had a knack of playing traditional percussion instruments.

He sang his first song in 1965 'Oru Mullappoomalayumaayi' for the film Kunhalimarikkar, however he rose to fame with his break-though song 'Manjalayil Mungi Thorthi' which became hit overnight. Some of the notable songs of the singer are Manjalayil Mungi Thorthi, Neelagiriyude Sakhikale, Thiruvabharanam Charthi Vidarnnu, Ramsanile Chand, among others.

P Jayachandran has worked with multiple noted music composers like G. Devarajan, A. R. Rahman, M. M. Keeravani, M. S. Baburaj, Ilaiyaraaja, and Vidyasagar, among others. The noted singer has earned several accolades in his career including winning National Film Award for Best Playback Male singer category in 1986. Other than that, he had also received Kerala State Film Award for five times. He was also awarded J.C. Daniel Award in 2020 for his contribution in Malayalam cinema. Furthermore, he has also won Tamil Nadu state award.

On the personal front, the singer was married to Lalitha, whom he got married in 1973. They had two children daughter Lakshmi and son Dinanath.
