Santhosh Varkey (Arattannan) Arrested After Actresses File Complaint Over Derogatory Social Media Remarks

Santhosh Varkey Arattannan Arrested Over Social Media Rema

Santhosh Varkey (Arattannan) Arrested: Social media personality and film reviewer Santhosh Varkey, widely known online as Arattannan, was arrested by the Kochi North Police on Thursday following multiple complaints filed by actresses and film industry professionals. The arrest was made under non-bailable sections after allegations emerged that Varkey repeatedly made offensive and derogatory remarks against women on various social media platforms.

The complaints were primarily lodged by actress Usha Haseena, along with dubbing artist and activist Bhagyalakshmi and actress Kukku Parameswaran. In their statements, the complainants accused Santhosh Varkey of persistently targeting women with content they described as demeaning to womanhood and damaging to personal dignity.

Actress Usha Haseena had previously filed a separate complaint with the Deputy Superintendent of Police in Alappuzha, highlighting how Santhosh Varkey's remarks had personally affected her. Usha, who has worked in the Malayalam film industry for nearly four decades, noted that the comments directed at her were not only personally distressing but also reflective of a larger pattern of misogyny in online discourse. Her complaint also called for strict legal action, stating that Santhosh Varkey's continued use of obscene language and vulgar commentary aimed at women cannot be tolerated.

Santhosh Varkey: From viral fame to legal trouble

Santhosh Varkey gained popularity in the online space after his viral review of the Mohanlal-starrer Aaraattu. His exaggerated delivery style, often described as cringe-worthy by critics, attracted attention and a sizable following. Though dismissed by many as a fringe voice, his videos resonated with certain segments of social media users. However, his commentary frequently drew backlash, particularly when it targeted public figures such as actress Nithya Menen. These developments have contributed to wider discussions about online behavior and the limits of expression on digital platforms.

While official details regarding his recent arrest are still emerging, reports suggest that legal proceedings could advance based on digital evidence and witness statements.
