Shaji N. Karun Passes Away: Renowned film director and cinematographer Shaji N. Karun passed away at the age of 73 on the evening of April 28, 2025, at his residence, 'Piravi,' located on Udarasiromani Road in Vazhuthacaud. He passed away at approximately 5 PM, according to reports from Deshabhimani. Shaji N. Karun is survived by his wife, Anasuya Devaki Warrier, and children, Appu Karun and Karun Anil.
Shaji N. Karun's contributions to the world of cinema were monumental. A celebrated figure in Malayalam cinema, he is remembered for his unparalleled contributions, especially in cinematography. Over the course of his career, he served as the cinematographer for around 40 films, many of which are considered milestones in the evolution of Malayalam cinema. His collaborations with the late filmmaker G. Aravindan were particularly influential, helping to shape the narrative and visual aesthetics of the new wave in Malayalam filmmaking.
As a director, Shaji N. Karun's most notable works include films like Piravi, Swaham, Vanaprastham, Nishad, Kutty Shranku, and AKG. His debut film, Piravi, was a breakthrough, receiving widespread acclaim, including Caméra d'Or - Mention Spéciale at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival. His second film, Swaham, was a rare achievement, being the only Malayalam film selected for competition at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.
Born in Kandachira, Kollam district, Shaji N. Karun was the eldest son of N. Karunakaran and Chandramathi. He received his early education at Pallikkara School and University College in Thiruvananthapuram. After completing his studies, he joined the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune in 1971, where he earned a diploma in cinematography.
In his professional journey, Shaji N. Karun worked closely with several legendary filmmakers, including K. G. George, M. T. Vasudevan Nair, Padmarajan, and Hariharan, contributing to films that have become part of the canon of Malayalam cinema. His career spanned decades, and he was honored with numerous accolades, including the National Award for Best Cinematography and three Kerala State Awards for Cinematography. In total, he won seven National Awards and seven State Awards for his contributions.
Shaji N. Karun's influence reached beyond India. He received international recognition for his work, receiving honors such as the French Government's Order of Arts and Letters and India's prestigious Padma Shri award for his contribution to the arts and culture.
