Thudarum: The Story and Its Roots

The story of Thudarum centers around Shanmugham, nicknamed Benz, a taxi driver in the town of Ranni. His ordinary life with his wife and children takes a turn when his car is seized due to its involvement in an unknown crime. The situation spirals further when Benz becomes an unwilling participant in a cover-up orchestrated by police officers.

The screenplay, written by K. R. Sunil and Tharun Moorthy, is based on a real-life encounter experienced by Sunil, a documentary photographer. The incident inspired a broader fictional narrative about systemic abuse and personal reckoning. Tharun was brought on board for direction after Renjith and Sunil felt he could do justice to the story's emotional complexities. Interestingly, Mohanlal had expressed interest in the story before the director was finalized.
