Thudarum OTT Release Date Announced: When And Where To Watch Mohanlal's Crime Thriller Online

Thudarum OTT Release Date: The wait is over for fans of Malayalam cinema who have been looking forward to watching Thudarum from the comfort of their homes. The crime thriller, which was released in theaters on April 25, 2025, is now set for its digital debut. The film will begin streaming on JioHotstar starting May 30, 2025, marking exactly five weeks since its theatrical release.
The official announcement came through the platform's social media handle, where it posted, "Thudarum will be streaming from 30 May only on JioHotstar."
A Box Office Feat Before OTT Arrival
Before arriving on the streaming platform, Thudarum made headlines for its performance at the Kerala box office. Film industry tracker AB George reported that the film's distributor share crossed ₹50 crore, a first in the history of Malayalam cinema. This distinguishes Thudarum from other regional hits, as it is the only Malayalam film so far to reach this benchmark in terms of share, which refers to the revenue earned by the film's distributors after theater owners take their cut.
To put this in perspective, Mohanlal's earlier blockbuster, Pulimurugan (2016), had been the first Malayalam film to gross over ₹50 crore and also achieve ₹50 crore in net collections. With Thudarum achieving the same figure in terms of distributor share, Mohanlal adds another milestone to his long list of box office achievements.
A Story Rooted in Loss, Betrayal, and Survival
Set in the quiet town of Perunad Ranni, Thudarum revolves around Shanmugham, nicknamed Benz, played by Mohanlal. Once a stuntman, Shanmugham has left behind his past following a personal tragedy and now works as a taxi driver. His seemingly peaceful life is thrown into turmoil when his beloved vehicle is confiscated by the police, who are investigating a crime linked to a mechanic's assistant.
The incident acts as a catalyst, dragging Shanmugham into a murky world of corruption, cover-ups, and hidden connections that bring his family into the spotlight. As he digs deeper, he finds that the truth is far more complex than it initially appeared. What follows is a journey that explores the grey areas of morality and justice, culminating in a tense and emotional conclusion.
Background and Development
The concept for Thudarum came from K. R. Sunil, a documentary photographer, who revealed that the plot was inspired by an encounter during one of his travels. He and producer M. Renjith felt that Tharun Moorthy, known for his ability to deal with emotionally layered characters, was the right person to direct the film.
Interestingly, Mohanlal had expressed interest in the story even before Tharun Moorthy came on board. The collaboration between the trio resulted in a narrative that blends emotional intensity with thriller elements, rooted in the daily struggles of ordinary people.
Behind the Scenes
The film boasts a large ensemble cast led by Mohanlal and Shobana, who plays his wife, Lalitha. The supporting cast includes Prakash Varma, Binu Pappu, Farhaan Faasil, Thomas Mathew, Maniyanpilla Raju, Aarsha Chandini Baiju, Irshad Ali, and others. Notable cameo appearances include actors Arjun Ashokan and Dinesh Prabhakar.
The screenplay, jointly written by Tharun Moorthy and K. R. Sunil, was brought to life with visuals by cinematographer Shaji Kumar. The editing was handled by Shafeeque VB and Nishadh Yusuf, while the film's background score and music were composed by Jakes Bejoy. Other key crew members include production designer Gokul Das, costume designer Sameera Saneesh, and makeup artist Pattanam Rasheed.

With its digital release now confirmed, Thudarum will be accessible to a wider audience who may have missed its theatrical run.
