Shaji N Karun Death Reason: Shaji N Karun passed away on April 28, 2025. The renowned Malayalam filmmaker breathed his last at the age of 73 at his residence in Vazhuthacaud. The national award-winning director is survived by his wife and two children. According to the reports, the filmmaker passed away on Monday at around 5 pm, as revealed by Deshabhimani. His critically acclaimed works in Piravi, Swaham, Vanaprastham, Nishad, and Kutty Shranku have brought him nationwide fame. From winning Camera d'Or to being mentioned d'honneur at Cannes, the filmmaker had many accolades in his bag.

Shaji N Karun had been suffering from cancer, and he was undergoing treatment for the same for quite some time now. According to the reports, the health of the veteran filmmaker had been deteriorating since this morning before he passed away in the evening on Monday.

Shaji N Karun Bio, Family, Films, Achievements

Apart from being a filmmaker, Shaji N Karun served as the Chairman of Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KSFDC). Born in 1952, he graduated from Thiruvananthapuram College and joined the Film Development Corporation as a film officer. Later, he got a diploma in cinematography in 1975 from the Pune Film Institute. After debuting in the filmmaking career with Piravi, after which he also named his home, the filmmaker has completed cinematography in 40 films.

His film Piravi is a Malayalam film that fetched the most International awards, while his film Swam is the first Malayalam film that was screened in the main competition section of the Cannes Film Festival. To note more, his film Piravi brought him the National Film Award for Best Direction.

Coming to personal life, Shaji N Karun was married to Anusuya Warrier in 1975, daughter of P.K.R. Warrier. They are parents to two sons Karun Anil and Appu Karun, whom they welcomed in 1976 and 1981, respectively.
