Malayalam audiences first saw her in the 2002 film Kuberan, directed by Sundar Das, where she appeared opposite Dileep. She later featured in Malayalam films including Vasanthamalika, Saphalam, and Ee Snehatheerathu, making a mark with a handful of performances.

Born to Kannada filmmaker D. Rajendra Babu and actress Sumithra, Uma comes from a family closely associated with the South Indian film industry. Her younger sister, Nakshatra, is also an actress. Alongside her acting career, Uma pursued a bachelor's degree in English literature.
