Uma Shankari is a familiar face across the Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam film industries. Malayalam audiences first saw her in the 2002 film Kuberan, directed by Sundar Das, where she appeared opposite Dileep. Born to Kannada filmmaker D. Rajendra Babu and actress Sumithra, Uma comes from a family closely associated with the South Indian film industry. Her younger sister, Nakshatra, is also an actress. Alongside her acting career, Uma pursued a bachelor's degree in English literature.

Uma made her acting debut in the Tamil film Veeranadai in 2000 and went on to appear in nearly 30 films across multiple languages. After marrying software engineer H.
