August 15 - Movie Review: A thriller without kick

Director Siby Malayil's 1988 film August 1, which was said to be inspired from the 1973 movie The Day of the Jackal, was superb movie with its credible script and lively characters. But its sequel August 15, which has been directed by Shaji Kailas, disappoints the movie buffs and reason behind it is that this movie suffers from a weak story and an old fashioned narration. It is a letdown in comparison to its old installment.

Producer M Mani's August 15 is a suspense thriller and superstar Mammootty's cool performance and Lalu Alex's comedy timings are the two major highlights. The movie is all about senior CID officer Perumal, who is entrusted with the mission of finding the killers of Chief Minister Vasudevan. It also throws light on present political situation in Kerala especially on the issues like lottery and land mafia.

But the movie disappoints the audience mainly because of its poor script and weak narration. Scriptwriter SN Swamy has repeated the same mistakes that he made in Sagar Alias Jackey, Baba Kaliyani, Positive and Rahasya Police. His biggest mistake in this suspense thriller is that the secret that he wants to unravel in the climax, is being revealed at the very beginning of the first half. And for the next 2 hours, everything becomes predictable. The climax also resembles a sequence from Hollywood film Inglourious Basterds.

The movie opens with the hospitalisation of Chief Minister Vasudevan (Nedumudi Venu) following a stroke. The police learn that he has been poisoned. So they hand over this case to CID Perumal (Mammootty) for investigation. How he unravels the mystery will form the climax. But the story first reveals the the killer and other assassins and then it deals with the investigation process, which makes the film a boring watch.

Shaji Kailas' big mistake is that he has employed too many characters, most of which do not have much important role to play in the story. As Perumal, Mammooty looks cool and younger with his motorcycle Enfield, slick sunglasses and denim pants. He has done even better in August 15 when compared to his role in August 1. Female leads Meghana Raj and Swetha Menon have nothing much to do. They blabber something and fade into the oblivion. As ADGP Lalu Alex is successful in tickling the funny bones of the audience. Siddique is nowhere near to Captain Raju in the first installment. Nedumudi Venu, Balachandran Chullikkadu, Thalaivasal Vijay, Biju Pappan are okey in their respective roles.

To Talk about the technical values, action sequence looks ordinary and has been choreographed badly. SN Swamy written dialogues are another big letdown. Deepak Dev's re-recording work is good, but his score for song disappoints the listeners. Pradeep Nair's camera work is good, but he could have done even better in some sequences. Overall, August 15 has lots of loopholes and illogical sequences. But if you are a fan of Mammooka, then don't miss to see him in cool getup
