The Malayalam film industry has churned out many horror movies over the years, some have been successful to keep the audience entertained, the rest failed miserably. So, when the veteran director Priyadarshan announced his new horror flick titled Geethanjali, with none other than Mohanlal in the lead role of Dr Sunny Joseph, well remembered through the classic Manichitrathazhu, expectations and hype were sky high. But through Geethanjali, Priyadarshan gifts his audience with a horror flick which is neither horrifying nor entertaining.

The movie begins with introduction of a young happy couple, Anoop (Nishan Naniah) and Anjali (Keerthy Menaka), working in Mumbai, who are deeply in love and are about to get engaged. Their happiness get destroyed when they get a phone call conveying that Anjali's mom Annamma (Seema) met with an accident in their home back in Kerala and is hospitalised. They take the next flight home. Here we are introduced to their home in Kerala, which is believed to be haunted with the soul of Geetha (Keerthy herself), twin sister of Anjali. The two decide to stay in the mansion and during that period, Anjali encounters several horrific encounters of a ghost which she believes to be Geetha.

In the flash back scenes, we get to know that Anjali in her school times itself is in love with Anoop, and with the similarity in looks, at some occasions, Anoop himself gets confused between Geetha and Anjali while expressing his love. Like Anjali, Geetha too falls in love with Anoop which causes clash between sisters and eventually results in the suicide of Geetha by jumping off a rock to the sea.

Being haunted by the ghost, Anoop seeks advice of Nakulan (Suresh Gopi) who introduces him to Dr Sunny Joseph, (Mohanlal) specialised in paranormal research and treatment. Then follows the events through which Sunny solves the mystery revolving around the haunted house and Geetha.

Mohanlal As Dr Sunny

Mohanlal As Dr Sunny

Mohanlal as Dr Sunny has given a decent performance which makes him the best among other actors in the movie. However, his character could have been much more well molded.

Keerthi Menaka

Keerthi Menaka

Keerthi Menaka as Geetha and Anjali is good in portraying both roles considering it as her debut. Nishan Naniah as Anoop disappoints in his act. His dialogues and expressions seem to be inspired from some drama acts.

Innocent

Innocent

Innocent, through his role of Thankappan Aashari, is successful to make us laugh at parts.

Rest Of The Cast

Rest Of The Cast

Ganeshan as Vasu, Madhu as Babychan, Siddique as Thambichayan, Swapna Menon as Mary and Nasar as Kadhalikattu Thirumeni have given out a good performance, while Harisree Asokan as Kochukuttadan is completely wasted.

Technical

Technical

Cinematography by Tirru is wonderful at parts. Some camera shots and angles are just awesome. Editing by TS Suresh is just ok, where some scenes are even cut off without much sync with the next. Dialogues by Dennis Joseph are not worth and fails to impress.

Music

Music

Music by Vidyasagar is good. There are a total of three songs in the movie, of which two of them ('Muthe ninne' and 'Koodilla kuyilamme') are hummable. BGM of the movie is not new and is a cliche of the several horror movies we have come across.

Verdict

Verdict

On the whole, Geethanjali fails to entertain and horrify, even by following the same path of the usual horror movies. Priyadarshan could have worked better on this movie, at least to do justice to the tagline of a horror movie.

Give it a miss.
