Aami Movie Review

Aami is a biopic on Madhavikutty aka Kamala Surayya, who was one of the most celebrated writers of Malayalam literary world. The writer was also fondly called as Aami. The film is the director's take on the popular writer's life, from her childhood days to the old age.

At first, let's see how the cast & crew members of Aami have fared for the movie..

Manju Warrier As Madhavikutty aka Kamala Surayya

Manju Warrier As Madhavikutty aka Kamala Surayya

Manju Warrier justifies why she has been tagged as one among best actresses of the industry. In fact, she had to initially face some criticisms which were drawn based on her looks from the film and a few sequences from the trailer. But, after watching the entire film, you would understand that she has turned out to be the best choice for the role of Madhavikutty.

The actress comes out with a spectacular performance as the lead character going deeper into the emotional layers of the protagonist. The dialogue delivery and the accent are perfect and is in accordance with the milieu of the movie. Definitely, Aami features one of the finest performances of the actress.

Murali Gopy As Madhavadas

Murali Gopy As Madhavadas

The role of Madhavadas is quite safe in the hands of Murali Gopy. He comes up with a matured and controlled performance in this role, which indeed required an actor of his calibre.

Tovino Thomas

Tovino Thomas

Tovino Thomas does appear in a special role, who is the constant companion of Aami, throughout her life. The young actor has that charm which is much required for that role and he has put up a notable performance in the film.

Anoop Menon As Akbar

Script & Direction - Kamal

Script & Direction - Kamal

It is never an easy task to make a biopic. But Kamal is one such film-maker, who has proved his expertise in dealing with biopics through Celluloid. This time, with the biopic of Kamala Das, Kamal had a tough task as the life of the writer had its own share of controversies.

Kamal has pulled it off and packaged a product which is poetic right from the first frame. It wouldn't be wrong to tag Aami as one of the finest products of Kamal, the film-maker. He takes his own time to travel through the life of Madhavikutty, without delving much into her personal life. The script is well-layered and it addresses the audiences with utmost sincerity. At the same time, the fictional elements added to it does work out pretty well.

Songs - M Jayachandran

Songs - M Jayachandran

The songs of the film have been set to tune by M Jayachandran. The song Neermathalam sung by Shreya Ghosal is the pick among the lot and the song has a special place in the narration of the movie. Background score by Bijibal suits the movie exceedingly well.

Madhu Neelakandan's work with the camera is exemplary. The film traverses through different time periods and locations and the signature of a good cinematographer is quite evident in each frame. There might be different opinion about the running length of the movie, but still Sreekar Prasad has done a fine job with the cuts, offering the film a smooth flow. A special mention for the art department of the movie. At the same time, the make up work could have been slightly better, especially that of the central character.

Aami narrates the story and life of one of the most celebrated writer that Kerala has ever produced. The film travels through various time periods and locations. Aami isn't film that spoon-feeds the audiences but it takes the audiences for a cinematic experience through the thoughts, visions and the works of the real life character.

More often than less, while watching a biopic, the main requirement of the audiences is to know more about the controversies. As mentioned above, Aami doesn't delve much into controversies but addresses everything in a novel manner through the visions and outlook of the protagonist.

Aami flows at its own pace and the long duration might be considered as a slight negative by some. But, one should understand that it isn't film that entertains you with overdosage of fictional and commercial elements that such pace and length are in accordance to the requirements of the movie, which has in turn made the film a classy work.

Verdict

Aami offers a poetic journey through the life of one of the prolific writers of Kerala.
