    By Super Admin

Tuesday, September 19, 2006 Mumbai (UNI): Noted Ghazal Singer Bhupinder Singh returns to playback singing after nearly a decade in films like Traffic Signal and Red Swastik. The man behind his return to films is music composer Shamir Tandon who has composed music for Madhur Bhandarkar's movies. Talking to UNI after recording the song for Red Swastik written, directed and produced by Vinod Pande here, Bhupinder said he was busy with live performances and ghazal concerts with wife Mitali Singh, herself a ghazal singer of repute. ''Playback singing in films took a backseat and time just flew off. Every thing happens at the right time and one day I got a call from Shamir urging me to return to films'', he said.

''Yeh Jo Tera Shehar, Hai Ajeeb Shehar'', written by Vinod Pande who has also directed and produced Red Swastik, is a philosophical song, Bhupinder reveals. While the song from Traffic Signal is a romantic one. '' Yeh Jo....'' is a well composed and well written song, the singer says. The ghazal singer who had been around for nearly forty years in the professional music world is till date remembered for his very memorable film numbers like 'Ek Akela Is Shahar Main..' and 'Dil Dhondta Ha..'. It has been sometime since one heard Bhupinder render playback for the movies, however his work in the field of ghazal renditions continues till date.

Bhupinder began playback in 1964 when music director Madan Mohan gave him the chance with the noted singer Mohmmed Rafi in Chetan Anand's Haqeeqat. The song was 'Hoke Majboor Mujhe Usne Bulaya Hoga..', which was a hit. He joined the orchestra of R D Burman and played guitar for many of RD's greatest scores, like, 'Dum Maro Dum..' and 'Ek Hi Khwaab..'. He became good friends with R D Burman. R D gave him his first 'original' hit with the release of Parichay in 1972. Bhupinder sang two songs in Parichay ('Beete Na Beetai Raina..' and 'Mitwa Bole Meethe Bai..'). He got a lot of appreciation as well as recognitions. Parichay changed his outlook and composers took him seriously. Bhupinder developed his own singing style. Gulzar's films carved a niche for him with songs like 'Dil Dhoondta Hai..', 'Naam Gum Jayega..' and 'Ek Akela Is Shaher Mein..'.

He also began recording private songs. Bhupinder introduced more orchestration into the ghazal and going by the frequency with which these instruments were used in future ghazal recordings by other singers as well, the experiment had worked. He also used synthesisers, electric guitars, a drum set and the tabla to produce an overall haunting effect. Bhupinder's last recorded song for a film was Baadlon Se Kaat Kaat Kar.. written by Gulzar for the film Satya.
