Bhupen Hazarika's funeral to take place today

The body of legendary singer Bhupen Hazarika, which arrived in Guwahati from Mumbai on Monday was welcomed by a huge number of people, spread across the 30 km stretch of road from the airport to his home in Nizarapar.

Thousands flocked to pay homage to Bhupen Hazarika. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Governor JB Patnaik received the body of Hazarika at the airport. The body was later shifted to Judges" Field for public viewing.

The cremation will take place today as soon as Hazarika's only son arrives from the US to perform the last rites on the banks of the Brahmaputra. The Guwahati University has reportedly offered a huge plot to perform the last rites for the legendary singer. Bhupen Hazarika has not only worked in Guwahati University for a few years, but also wrote its anthem.

Bhupen Hazarika, who died of multi-organ failure on 5 November, 2011, was a popular singer, composer, lyricist, music director and filmmaker from Assam.
