Washington (ANI): Pop star Madonna celebrated the Jewish New Year by kidding that she's the world's new 'ambassador for Judaism". Madonna, who is a popular Kabbalah devotee, met Israeli President Shimon Peres on Sept 16, 2007, during a family trip to the Holy Land, Israel. Madonna presented the president with a volume of Kabbalah bible' The Book of Splendor and Peres gave the singer a copy of the Old Testament,
Even though the pop star isn't Jewish, she declared her commitment to Judaism and while celebrating Jewish New Year, she joked with Peres saying ' am an ambassador for Judaism," reported a local newspaper the Yediot Ahronot. "You don't know how popular the Book of Splendor is among Hollywood actors... Everyone I meet talks to me only about that. I am an ambassador for Judaism," Contactmusic quoted Madonna, as telling Peres. "I can't believe that I'm celebrating the new year with you in Israel. It's a dream come true," she added.
Apart from Madonna, Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher, Madonna's longtime pal Rosie O'Donnell and fashion designer Donna Karan were also in the Holy Land to celebrate. But it seems that Madonna and hubby Guy Ritchie had different reasons to visit Israel. The pop diva"s purpose of visit was to celebrate the Jewish New Year, but her director hubby"s idea seemed a little different.
While Madonna spent the day in meditation, Guy wrapped himself in a towel on Tel Aviv beach and boozed the time away before taking a dip in the sea with friends. Madonna, who was raised a Catholic but has taken the Jewish name Esther, knelt with hundreds of other believers at the David Intercontinental Hotel to mark one of the holiest days in the Kabbalah calendar.
But, Guy, on the other hand, was getting redder by the minute as he carried on drinking and laughing it up with his pals on the beach in the sunshine. Madonna's first visit to Israel was three years ago, on a Kabbalah centred trip.
