Lady Gaga's third studio album, “Born This Way" sold 1,108,000 copies in its first week of release, debuting at number 1 in the Billboard top 200. It is only the 17th album in the world to hit the million benchmark, after album sales started being tracked by SoundScan, since 1991. This is Lady Gaga's first album which has topped the Billboard charts on its debut.

The record for highest sales in the opening week is held by NSYNC's “No Strings Attached," which also topped the Billboard 200 charts, selling 2,416,000 copies. Gaga's “Born this Way" is the first album to hit the million mark since 50 Cent's, “The Massacre" in 2005.

Also Gaga is only the 5th female artist to hit the million mark after Whitney Houston in 1992, Britney Spears in 2000, Norah Jones in 2004 and Taylor Swift in 2010.
