Actor Sukant Ray is currently captivating audiences in Neeraj Pandey's highly praised crime thriller series, Khakee: The Bengal Chapter, streaming on Netflix. The show features an ensemble cast including Jeet, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Ritwik Bhowmik, Chitrangda Singh, Aadil Zafar Khan, Mimoh Chakraborty, and Aakanksha Singh. In a recent interview, Sukant shared insights into his character, the challenges of preparing for the role, and his experience working with the talented team.
Sukant plays the role of Mofizul, a character who hails from Bihar and moves to Kolkata as a child. Faced with financial hardship, Mofizul becomes involved in criminal activities and eventually joins a gang. Reflecting on his preparation for the role, Sukant revealed, "I was asked to learn different accents, as well as grow a beard to match the look of a Muslim character. Additionally, I was advised to gain some body weight to match the physicality of the role."
Although the character required significant transformation, Sukant found the process smooth due to his background. "I am a graduate of the National School of Drama, so we are trained to understand and perform characterizations effectively. The director's brief also helped me a lot in shaping my role."
Sukant also mentioned the positive reception his performance has received. "The feedback from everyone who has seen Khakee: The Bengal Chapter has been overwhelmingly positive. People have particularly praised my look and the energy of my character, which has been very encouraging."
He expressed gratitude toward Friday Films and director Neeraj Pandey, stating, "I am truly thankful to Neeraj Pandey Sir for giving me the opportunity to work with him. His team was wonderful, and the direction of this series was done exceptionally well."
In preparation for the role, Sukant was given additional instructions, including learning a specific accent and even swimming for a crucial scene. "I was told that Mofizul was an important gang member, and I had to be able to swim, as there is a scene where my character jumps into the sea and escapes by crossing it."
Sukant also shared his experience working with his fellow cast members, most of whom are from Kolkata. "All the actors were from Kolkata, and I loved working with them. They were incredibly helpful, and their positive nature made the experience even more enjoyable. I learned a lot from them during the filming."
