Bindiya Ke Bahubali 2 Director Raj Amit Kumar Exclusive

In an exclusive conversation with Mimtaz from Filmibeat, Bindiya Ke Bahubali 2 director Raj Amit Kumar reveals whether Season 3 is on the cards. He spills beans on future plans, fan response, and what lies ahead for the hit series.

Here are excerpts from the interview:

1) Bindiya Ke Bahubali Season 2 has dropped today on Amazon Prime Video and MX Player, and the scale feels much bigger. How has the audience response been so far?

The audience response has been good so far. Season 1 had a pretty large viewership. On MX Player and Prime Video, the number was close to 28 million, and it was a pretty large viewership. But the trailer response to Bindiye Ke Bahubali 2 was pretty big.

2) How different was the shooting experience of Season 2 compared to Season 1?

They were kind of shot around the same time and it was one long go. That is why we were also able to release it so soon after Season 1. It was a great singular experience.

3) The show boasts a powerhouse cast - Ranvir Shorey, Saurabh Shukla, Seema Biswas, Sai Tamhankar, Tanishtha Chatterjee, Kranti Prakash Jha, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, and Sheeba Chaddha. With such strong performers, how challenging was it to balance so many powerful characters on screen?

I have been asked this question many times about how challenging it is to work with these giants of amazing actors. I always say it's not challenging, it's actually simpler because all of them bring such talent on set and so much preparation of their own and their own versions of how they should be playing that character, which is very invigorating for a director. So it was not challenging for me in terms of working with these actors. It was a beautiful, blissful, amazing experience.

4) Which actor surprised you the most with their performance in Season 2?

You know, you get surprised every day. I don't know how to ever pinpoint that feeling. Once you start making something, it truly comes to life for the first time when the actors begin performing. And no matter what anyone says, when it does come to life, it's never exactly in the same shape or form that you may have imagined or thought of. So, there's a surprise happening every day. And as you said, there are so many great actors-everyone was doing something magical every now and then. It was a surprise-filled shoot throughout, in many ways.

5) For those you are yet to watch Bindiya Ke Bahubali 2 episodes, how different is season 2 from the first part?

Season 1 was the setup of this world. For me, Bindiya is a microcosm of India, where different social institutions merge into an absurdist universe-that's what I attempted to create. Season 1 was about establishing this world, setting up the relationships, and taking the story to a point from where it could explode. Bindiya Ke Bahubali Season 2 is that explosion; it's one big burst of everything coming together. You'll enjoy the explosion. As Ranvir Shorey says, you'll enjoy the tequila shots. Season 1 was the salt, and this is the tequila shot.

5) Now that Season 2 is out, fans are already asking-is Season 3 on the cards, and if yes, how far along are those conversations?

For Season 3, all the audiences-and people like you-should start making calls to Amazon and MX Player, urging them to get Season 3 made as soon as possible. It took me five years to make Seasons 1 and 2. During those five years, we were also going through the COVID period, with all kinds of challenges along the way-the disastrous pandemic and everything that came with it. Season 3, however, shouldn't take that long.

6) What can viewers expect from season 3?

Like I said, Season 1 was just the setup, and this is a very long story-one that can span many seasons. From here on, things will only escalate. But escalation doesn't mean bombs exploding everywhere; it's about the deepening of relationships and the growing absurdity of the world. Now that all the major conflicts are in place, it's about taking those conflicts further and exploring their journeys. So, from here on, tighten your seatbelts-it's going to be one long ride.
