Despatch: Manoj Bajpayee On His Grey Character Says "You Wll Want To Hate Him, But End Up Liking Him,"

Manoj Bajpayee, one of Bollywood's finest actors, takes on yet another complex and compelling role in ZEE5's latest Despatch, a thriller that delves deep into the world of crime journalism. Bajpayee plays Joy Bag, a senior crime journalist navigating the murky waters of Mumbai's underworld while struggling to stay relevant in an increasingly digital newsroom. In a candid conversation, Bajpayee opened up about the challenges of portraying this grey and morally ambiguous, grey character, sharing how he had to "learn how to be bad" to capture the essence of Joy. His character takes the audience through a whirlwind of conflicting emotions as they witness Joy's character, drawn into a battle between admiration and disdain.
When asked about the one skill Manoj Bajpayee had to acquire to bring this role to life, he responded, "I learned how to be bad," with a laugh. He explained further, "How to be bad is also a skill that one acquires. How to be so uncouth, so obnoxious, and so nasty with near and dear ones. It's something that I worked on and experienced while playing the role of Joy Bag."
Manoj's character in Despatch is designed to evoke conflicting feelings in the audience. While his actions may be questionable, there is a vulnerability to him that sparks empathy. Manoj elaborated, "My character in this film is very grey. You will want to hate him, but you will end up liking him sometimes. The things that he is doing are questionable, but at the same time, you see him so fearful, so nervous, and so scared that you begin to empathize with him. The audience will go through the same conflict-whether to admire him or hate him."
