EXCLUSIVE! Chhal Kapat Director Ajay Bhuyan Reveals Why He Found Shriya Pilgaonkar Perfect For Playing Devika

ZEE5's latest release, Chhal Kapat, is captivating audiences and receiving widespread acclaim. Directed by Ajay Bhuyan, the thriller features a star-studded cast. In an interview with Filmibeat, Bhuyan discussed the lead actress Shriya Pilgaonkar, the characters, and more.
"Shooting Chhal Kapat: The Deception was as exhilarating as it was demanding. With an ensemble cast, the biggest challenge is balancing each character's narrative arc while keeping the overall momentum tight. Managing egos, frankly, is about creating a space where every actor feels valued and heard. I focused on clear communication, thorough prep, and a strong understanding of each actor's process," he quipped.
Complex Characters in Chhal Kapat
Bhuyan acknowledged that Chhal Kapat was one of his most intricate projects due to its layered characters. "Yes, this was definitely one of my most complex projects. Every character carries secrets, motivations, and emotional baggage that unfolds slowly, and capturing that without giving away too much was a constant tightrope walk. We couldn't rely on tropes; every beat had to feel lived-in. But that's what made it exciting-it wasn't just about solving a mystery; it was about peeling layers of human behavior."
Shriya Pilgaonkar's portrayal of Devika stood out for Bhuyan. "Shriya brought a unique blend of empathy and steel to Devika. She's incredibly intuitive as an actor-able to portray toughness without losing the vulnerability beneath. What I loved most about working with her is her curiosity. She dives deep into the 'why' of a scene, not just the 'how.' She's collaborative, intelligent, and brings a quiet intensity that elevates everyone around her. I'd work with her again in a heartbeat because she cares deeply about story-and that always shows."
Director's Journey in Film Industry
Reflecting on his career spanning Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi films and series over ten years, Bhuyan shared insights from his journey. "It's been a whirlwind of genres, languages, and learning curves. I've learned that storytelling is universal-but how people respond to characters can be deeply cultural. From regional cinema, I've picked up a rawness and emotional honesty; from Hindi projects, a certain polish and structure. For Chhal Kapat, I brought both. We kept the emotions grounded while also making sure the pacing and production is slick."
When asked about what makes Chhal Kapat unique among murder mysteries available on various platforms, Bhuyan explained its distinctive elements: "To me, Chhal Kapat isn't just a murder mystery-it's an emotional pressure cooker disguised as a whodunnit. What sets it apart is that the mystery is not just about what happened but why people become who they are. The backdrop of a wedding-a place of celebration-makes the unraveling even more interesting. It's about masks we wear in public, and the truths we bury in private. Every smile in this story hides a wound."
The director's approach to managing an ensemble cast involved ensuring each actor felt appreciated through effective communication and preparation.
