From Damini To IKKA: Hindi Cinema's Most Iconic Courtroom Dramas
There are courtroom dramas... and then there are courtroom dramas that stay with you long after the judge has delivered the verdict. Whether it's a whistle-worthy dialogue, a lawyer who becomes larger than life, or a case that keeps you guessing till the very end, this genre has given Hindi cinema some of its most unforgettable moments.

With Sunny Deol returning to the courtroom after more than three decades in Netflix's IKKA on July 10 , there's no better time to revisit the legal dramas that kept us hooked.
Damini (1993)
If there's one courtroom drama that changed the game, it's Damini. It didn't just give us one of Hindi cinema's most iconic lawyers-it gave us Govind, the man behind dialogues that are still quoted decades later. Sunny Deol's towering courtroom presence, his relentless fight for justice and those unforgettable dialogues turned Damini into the gold standard for courtroom dramas. Even today, every cinematic lawyer is measured against Govind.
Maamla Legal Hai (2024)

Who says courtroom dramas have to be serious? Maamla Legal Hai proved that the law can be just as hilarious as it is dramatic. Led by a stellar ensemble featuring Ravi Kishan, Naila Grewal, Nidhi Bisht, Anant V. Joshi and Anjum Batra, among others, the series took audiences inside the Patparganj District Court, where quirky lawyers juggled bizarre cases, eccentric clients and everyday courtroom chaos. Equal parts satire and legal comedy, it offered a refreshing, light-hearted take on the legal world while proving that courtroom dramas don't always need raised voices to keep audiences hooked.
Jolly LLB Franchise (2013-2025)
Few franchises have made courtroom dramas this entertaining. Whether it was Arshad Warsi's street-smart underdog lawyer or Akshay Kumar's quick-witted advocate taking on powerful opponents, the Jolly LLB films found the perfect balance between humour, emotion and hard-hitting social commentary. Sharp arguments, memorable judges and plenty of mic-drop courtroom moments-this franchise delivered them all!
Pink (2016)
Sometimes, one courtroom speech is enough to change a conversation across the country. Pink did exactly that. What began as a legal battle involving three young women (played by Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari and Andrea Tariang) became a powerful conversation about consent, dignity and society's double standards. Amitabh Bachchan's restrained yet powerful performance as lawyer Deepak Sehgal helped make Pink one of the most talked-about courtroom dramas of the last decade.
Maharaj (2024)

Inspired by the landmark Maharaj Libel Case of 1862, Maharaj followed journalist Karsandas Mulji (Junaid Khan) as he took on a powerful religious leader accused of exploiting women under the guise of faith. Also starring Jaideep Ahlawat, Shalini Pandey and Sharvari, the film built towards an intense courtroom battle centred on truth, courage and freedom of the press. Rooted in history yet deeply relevant, Maharaj stood out as a compelling legal drama that explored the cost of speaking truth to power.
IKKA (2026)
More than thirty years after Damini, Sunny Deol is back in the courtroom-but this time, nothing is black and white. In IKKA, he plays celebrated lawyer Arjun Mehra, a man forced to defend Shauryamann Gaur (Akshaye Khanna), someone deeply tied to his own past. Also starring Dia Mirza and Tillotama Shome, the trailer has already teased explosive courtroom exchanges, powerful dialogues and a reunion audiences have waited nearly three decades to witness. The biggest question now? Can Arjun Mehra win the case without losing himself? We'll find out when IKKA premieres on Netflix on July 10.
Whether rooted in truth, driven by moral conviction or packed with edge-of-the-seat legal battles, these courtroom dramas have proven that some of cinema's most compelling stories unfold not on the battlefield, but inside a courtroom. With Sunny Deol returning to don the lawyer's robe after more than three decades, IKKA looks set to add a new chapter to this enduring legacy when it premieres on Netflix on July 10.
