Gram Chikitsalay (2025) Plagiarism Controversy
Directed by Rahul Pandey and created by The Viral Fever (TVF), the recently-released Prime Video series Gram Chikitsalay revolves around the story of Dr. Prabhat Sinha (Amol Parashar) who comes to Bhatkandi as the new MO of the PHC (Primary Health Care).
In the show, Vinay Pathak plays the role of Dr. Chetak Kumar, who looks after the patients in the village without having any real MBBS degree. Akansha Ranjan essays the role of another MO Dr. Gargi.
Right after the release of Gram Chikitsalay trailer, the show got itself entangled in a controversy over accusations of plagiarism. Kolkata-based filmmaker and a registered member of the Screenwriters Association (SWA) Anindyabikas Datta accused Vinay Pathak of plagiarising his original script titled 'Quack Shankar.'
In a lengthy Facebook post, Datta claimed that he had approached Pathak for the lead role in Quack Shankar and also shared the full script and project details. While Pathak initially showed interest, their talks didn't move forward. And two years later, he was shocked after watching Gram Chikitsalay trailer. He even attached screenshots of his chat with Vinay Pathak to prove his claim.
A part of his Fb post read, "#plagiarism
I am a writer/filmmaker and am a member of SWA (Anindya Bikas Datta, #41836). An incident of copyright/IP rights violation has happened with one of my registered screenplays - "QUACK SHANKAR" (Ref. No. 1607055694, Dated 04/12/2020). I want to bring this to light and request your action against the same.
In January 2021, I had shared the aforementioned script with renowned actor Mr. Vinay Pathak @pathakvinay I had shared the project deck with Mr.Pathak, and the entire @swaindiaorg SWA registered screenplay, hoping for him to play one of the lead roles. However, he was interested in the lead role while we considered him for the principal antagonist. We promised him if he was interested in pursuing, then we would further build on the antagonist's role after discussion with him. However, the talks fell through, and his involvement with the project did not materialize.
However, on viewing the trailer of the upcoming @amazonprime Amazon show, I find that the central storyline of my script and the associated characters have been directly lifted and used in an upcoming show named "Gram Chikitsalaya." And surprise - it's none other than Mr.Pathak who is essaying the lead role. (sic)"
Gram Chikitsalay Ending Explained: What Happens In The Last Episode?
Throughout the show, Prabhat struggles to get any patient. After receiving an envelope from the CMO officer, he hesitates to open it. However, it was in the last episode (ep 5), that he finally got the answer to why Sudhir, Nurse Indu Ji's son, was lying about stealing the vaccines. Turns out, Sudhir wasn't actually lying, he was suffering from a mental disorder called DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder). After an emotional confrontation scene between Prabhat and Indu Ji, the PHC finally has its 'Bohni' and Prbahat gets his first-ever patient.
And right before the end of the last episode, we saw Prabhat beams with hope as another villager shows his trust and comes to him for consultation.
