Gullak 5 update: Actor Jay Thakkar has returned as the much-loved Suryanarayan in Season 5 of TVF's Gullak, and this time, the character comes with a larger presence and more layers than before.
Known for his roles in Bhool Chuk Maaf, Kapkapiii, UP65, Ek Dujey Ke Vaaste 2, Adrishyam, Guturgu, and others, the actor shared that stepping back into the character's shoes felt both emotional and rewarding, and how he has evolved over the seasons.
In an exclusive conversation with Filmibeat Assistant Editor Abhishek Ranjit, Jay got candid about reprising the popular role in Gullak 5.
"Stepping back into the shoes of Suryanarayan for Season 5 feels incredibly special. When I was first cast in Gullak Season 4, a lot of effort went into shaping the character, and it was a wonderful learning experience as an actor. So, when I received the call for Season 5 nearly two years later, it felt very encouraging and emotional. It made me feel remembered, valued, and appreciated as an actor. This season, Suryanarayan has a stronger presence, more scenes, more interactions, and more opportunities to contribute to the story," Jay exclusively told Filmibeat
The actor revealed that audiences will get to witness several new dimensions of Suryanarayan this season while retaining the charm that made him a fan favourite.
"In Season 4, audiences primarily saw Suryanarayan as a quirky, humorous, charming, and slightly flirtatious character. While those qualities are still very much a part of him, this season allows viewers to see many more dimensions of his personality. Suryanarayan is more emotional, more sensitive, and more involved in the lives of the people around him. One of the biggest differences this season is that he shares meaningful moments with more members of the Gullak family. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but Suryanarayan's personal life takes an interesting turn this season. Viewers will see a new romantic angle in his journey, which adds warmth, vulnerability, and a fresh dynamic to the character," he shared.
Speaking about what makes Gullak resonate so strongly with audiences, Jay says, "I think one of the biggest strengths of Gullak is that every character feels real and familiar. Surya Narayan contributes to that authenticity because he represents the kind of friend almost everyone has had in their life. He is dependable, supportive, and someone who stands by the people he cares about. At the same time, he brings humour, energy, confidence, and warmth to the story. He is not perfect, and that makes him relatable," he said.
Gullak Season 5 premiered on SonyLIV on June 5. The new season stars Anant V. Joshi, Jameel Khan, Geetanjali Kulkarni, Harsh Mayar, Sunita Rajwar, along with Shivankit Singh Parihar, Gopal Dutt, Manuj Sharma, and Helly Shah.
The premiere of the series holds special significance for Jay, as it coincides with his 22nd year in the entertainment industry, a journey that began in 2004.

The third episode of Gullak season 5 will be available for streaming on June 12 on SonyLIV. The first two episodes have been released online.
