Matka King Release Date: Kritika Kamra Talks About Finding And Decoding The Game Of Matka In Prime Video Show

Prime Video's Matka King follows Gulrukh, a privileged Parsi widow, as she navigates power, agency, and personal identity within a world defined by wealth and the Matka game. The drama examines how class and protection intersect with vulnerability while detailing Gulrukh's journey toward a voice and empowerment.

Prime Video is gearing up to launch Matka King on April 17, with Kritika Kamra in a central role. Kritika portrays Gulrukh, a young Parsi widow from a wealthy background. The story tracks how privilege can feel restrictive. The show becomes the space where Gulrukh starts to understand power, agency, and personal identity.

For Kritika, Gulrukh stands apart from previous characters played on screen. The role places Kritika inside an insulated, luxurious universe, yet the character has limited real-world exposure. This contrast attracted Kritika, who was drawn to the tension between comfort and control. The series uses Gulrukh’s journey to examine how power works within relationships and social structures.

Matka King, Kritika Kamra and Prime Video explore power and privilege

Describing this central conflict in Matka King, Kritika Kamra explains the emotional core of Gulrukh. Kritika says, "Gulrukh comes from a space of power, privilege, and a protected environment, yet despite all of this, she feels powerless, and that's what makes the character so interesting. It's about how her journey in the show eventually leads her to discover her own sense of power. There's a strong contrast in her world, she belongs to one reality but finds herself stepping into another, and that dynamic between people and power is extremely fascinating. My upbringing and Gulrukh's upbringing have nothing in common, so it was especially interesting to step into the shoes of someone who comes from privilege, yet is looking for power to be liberated."

Kritika highlights that personal life experiences are very different from Gulrukh’s privileged background. This distance helped Kritika study the character with fresh eyes. Playing someone cushioned by wealth, but still seeking freedom, gave space to examine hidden vulnerabilities. The performance focuses on how Gulrukh slowly learns to claim a voice within unfamiliar, often unsettling situations.

Matka King, Kritika Kamra and Prime Video delve into the game

To convincingly portray a world built around the Matka game, Kritika Kamra and the team had to understand its rules. Sharing how the cast prepared, Kritika adds, "We played Matka multiple times, during table reads, on-set, just to understand, because until you play the game, you won't understand the technicalities of it. We had received a brief which helped us understand the game theoretically, we read it, re-read it and then finally after multiple rounds understood the game."

The series Matka King brings together a large ensemble under creator and writer Abhay Koranne, with Nagraj Popatrao Manjule also serving as creator, writer, and director. Vijay Varma, Kritika Kamra, Sai Tamhankar, Siddharth Jadhav, Bhupendra Jadawat, and Gulshan Grover lead the cast. They are joined by Bharat Jadhav, Girish Kulkarni, Jamie Lever, Kishor Kadam, Cyrus Sahukar, Arpita Sethia, Sambhaji Tangade, Ishtiyak Khan, Sanjivv Jotangia, and Simran Ashwini.
