Nawazuddin Surrenders To The Script And Elevates It” — Sejal Shah On Her Lead Star In Costao

Bringing the untold story of a real-life customs officer to screen, Costao is director Sejal Shah's compelling debut, led by powerhouse performers Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Priya Bapat. Set in 1990s Goa, the film dives into a world of crime, justice, and personal sacrifice with unflinching honesty. Costao premieres on May 1 exclusively on ZEE5.
Director Sejal Shah says, "Nawazuddin is one of our finest actors-a veteran who completely surrenders to the script and elevates it. It's the honor of my life to have him lead my debut film. Nawaz and I have been good friends since our first collaboration on the sets of Serious Men, which my partner and I produced and Bhavesh Mandalia wrote. Bhavesh has played a vital role in shaping Costao as well. I blindly trust Nawaz and admire him deeply as an actor. Watching him take on the complex character of Costao Fernandes was extraordinary-we had very few retakes because he brought such clarity and depth from the get-go.
The trials and triumphs of Costao make for a story that deserves to be heard across the world. We hope we've done it justice and have started that conversation. The film examines the true cost of heroism, integrity, and honesty in a country where those values often come at a high personal price. Beyond themes of justice, power, and betrayal, Costao also explores the emotional relationship between a father and daughter. It shows how families often become collateral damage when one person chooses to walk the path of truth and righteousness.
Without giving away spoilers, I must mention a scene set in a graveyard toward the climax. It features a monologue by Nawaz that is sheer magic. It moved us all to tears on set. It's one of those moments that stays with you-raw, powerful, and emotionally overwhelming. That day, it was difficult for all of us to pull ourselves out of the weight of that scene. You'll see."
