Starring Lee Jung-jae in the lead role, Squid Game 2 is writted and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk. While fans are excited about the premiere of the second season on December 26 on Netflix, let's take a look at the recap and spoilers of the first installment.

SQUID GAME SEASON 1 RECAP AND SPOILERS

A total of 456 individuals, burdened by financial struggles, agree to participate in a competition that promises to transform their lives. Transported to a mysterious facility, they are tasked with playing what seem like simple childhood games. However, these games are far from innocent, as the consequences of losing are fatal. Each "elimination" (or death) adds 100 million won to the prize pool, with the ultimate reward standing at a staggering 45.6 billion won.

As the contestants face one harrowing challenge after another, the competition narrows down to three survivors: Gi-hun, Sae-byeok (played by Jung Ho-yeon), and Sang-woo (portrayed by Park Hae-soo). Gi-hun develops a deep sense of empathy, particularly for Sae-byeok, but Sang-woo becomes ruthless in his pursuit of victory. In a heart-wrenching betrayal, Sang-woo kills the already injured Sae-byeok, setting the stage for a final showdown.

The last game pits childhood friends Gi-hun and Sang-woo against each other. Overcome with rage, Gi-hun gains the upper hand but hesitates to kill Sang-woo. Sang-woo, unable to accept defeat, takes his own life, asking Gi-hun to care for his mother. Gi-hun emerges as the winner, but his victory feels hollow, as the enormous prize money now symbolizes the immense cost of survival.

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED IN SQUID GAME SEASON 1 CLIMAX

After claiming the grand prize, Gi-hun returns home, only to be met with an unbearable loss-his mother has passed away. Overwhelmed by grief and guilt, he spends the next year wandering here and there, disconnected from life. One day, a familiar business card bearing the Squid Game logo resurfaces, this time accompanied by an address and signed "gganbu," a term symbolizing an old companion.

Curiosity and anger lead Gi-hun to a sleek high-rise building. On the seventh floor, he encounters a shocking revelation-Oh Il-nam (O Yeong-su), the elderly contestant he once bonded with and ultimately betrayed during the emotional marbles game, is alive. Confined to a hospital bed, Il-nam admits that his terminal brain tumor was genuine but discloses a darker truth. He had masterminded the Squid Game as a twisted way to feel alive before his death. Following this confession, Il-nam succumbs to his illness, leaving Gi-hun reeling from the realization that the "friend" he trusted was the planner of the deadly game.

As Gi-hun prepares to fly to the U.S. to reunite with his daughter, he spots 'The Salesman' recruiting another player on a train. Though unable to confront him, Gi-hun stops the recruit, confiscating the Squid Game card. Moments before boarding his flight, he calls the number on the card, leading to a chilling encounter with the Front Man. Their exchange hints at Gi-hun's next move - turning his pain into a quest for revenge, setting the stage for a gripping continuation in Squid Game Season 2.
