The Mind Behind Karisma Kapoor's 'Brown': Writer Mayukh Ghosh On Abhinay Deo, Kolkata, Crime And Psychology

Acclaimed writer and filmmaker Mayukh Ghosh is making waves with the recent release of 'Brown' on Zee5, the neo-noir psychological thriller starring Karisma Kapoor, for which he dons the hat of the writer. Having previously made his mark with notable projects such as Hostages (JioHotstar) and Serious Men (Netflix), Mayukh brings his distinctive voice to 'Brown', taking audiences into a dark and immersive world where crime, psychology, and the city of Kolkata intertwine in fascinating ways.

The Mind Behind Karisma Kapoor s Brown

With 'Brown', directed by Abhinay Deo of Delhi Belly fame, Mayukh brings his signature storytelling style to a series that balances psychological intrigue with emotional depth. As the writer, he weaves together a convoluted murder investigation, deeply layered characters, and the lesser-explored world of Kolkata's Anglo-Indian community to create a narrative that is both gripping and emotionally resonant. Central to the narrative is Rita Brown, a complex protagonist whose personal journey is as compelling as the mystery she seeks to unravel. Through rich world-building, cultural authenticity and nuanced character arcs, Mayukh crafts a thriller that moves beyond conventional genre tropes, making 'Brown' a standout addition to the psychological thriller space.

Speaking about the series, Mayukh shares, "When I came on board 'Brown', the idea was never just to tell a murder mystery. What excited me most was the opportunity to build a world about flawed people carrying past trauma, fighting to stay human, and a city that mirrors this very struggle. To bring that world to life, I did extensive research, which brings authenticity into the portrayal of Anglo-Indian life and the workings of Kolkata Police's historic detective department. The balance between an intense thriller and a deeply human story was something I wanted to bring to the screen for 'Brown'."

Speaking about Karisma Kapoor's portrayal of Rita Brown, Mayukh adds, "Rita is deeply human with the trauma she carries, her relationship with alcohol, the cigarettes she rolls by hand, the everyday fight to show up. Once Karisma understood Rita and finished her training of rolling cigarettes from Abhinay, she got completely under the character's skin and brought her alive in ways I hadn't imagined."

Reflecting on his collaboration with Abhinay Deo, he further shares, "It has been one of the most creatively fulfilling experiences of my career. We spent months refining the narrative, constantly pushing ourselves to stay true to the core vision. Abhinay and I are both unrepentant foodies, and we found a way to represent the city through its cuisine like Anglo delicacies, Chinatown haunts, a remembered ginger-wine recipe, sattu sherbet. It's a city in Bengal, but never one for Bengalis alone. We decided to weave in Tagore's songs and poems as a kind of collective conscience of the city, often around characters who don't speak Bengali."

As 'Brown' continues to find its audience, Mayukh Ghosh further cements his place as one of the most exciting creative talents in the OTT space today. Having written popular series and collaborations with renowned filmmakers, Mayukh has steadily built a reputation for crafting compelling and impactful stories. With 'Brown' marking another significant milestone in his journey, Mayukh now gears up for his directorial debut, 'Mokova', which is currently in development.
