The Royals: Maharani Of Baroda Irked With Misrepresentation of Royals In Ishaan-Bhumi’s Netflix Series

The Royals has sparked debate as Maharani Radhikaraje Gaekwad criticises its portrayal of Indian royalty. Despite mixed reviews, the show remains popular, with a second season announced.

The Royals Controversy: The series 'The Royals,' featuring Ishaan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar, has sparked varied reactions. While some viewers appreciated the show, others criticised it. Despite this, it remains a trending topic. The presence of actors like Ishaan Khatter and Zeenat Aman, along with the beautiful royal palaces, has captivated many. Recently, Maharani Radhikaraje Gaekwad of Baroda shared her thoughts on how the series misrepresents Indian royals.

Radhikaraje Gaekwad began her note by expressing disappointment over the portrayal of Indian royals in 'The Royals.' She remarked that despite being well-documented and influential in various fields, the depiction was not accurate. "One would imagine the royals of India...would have a better chance of surviving an on-screen portrayal such as the one in The Royals. Alas, that was not to be and such is our fate since 1947," she wrote.

Reality vs. Fiction: A Royal Perspective

The Maharani highlighted a significant shift post-1947 when India's monarchy gracefully transitioned to a democratic republic. Despite losing official titles and privileges, royal families continue contributing to society through governance, education, hospitality, and heritage conservation. Their involvement shapes cultural and social landscapes even today.

Radhikaraje also addressed the evolving role of royal women who are now leaders and custodians of their heritage. They actively preserve traditions, festivals, art forms, and historic landmarks ensuring their legacy endures in modern times. Although lacking formal power, these women remain influential figures within their communities.

She acknowledged that while some royals may have tarnished reputations, India's history is unique for its lack of revolts or assassinations against monarchs. "India has the unique distinction of being one of the only countries where royals reigned for centuries without any known instances of revolt or assassination," she noted.

Audience Reactions and Future Prospects

The Maharani concluded by mentioning how younger generations are actively promoting their legacy. Her note resonated with netizens who praised her graceful rebuttal to the show's misinterpretations. One user commented, "Very well said, could not have been put better." Another added that most people found the series poorly made with little background research.

Despite mixed reviews for 'The Royals,' a second season has already been announced. Besides Ishaan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar, the show features Zeenat Aman, Nora Fatehi, Dino Morea, Sakshi Tanwar among others. As discussions around its portrayal continue, audiences eagerly await what lies ahead for this controversial series.
