Veteran actress Archana Puran Singh has candidly spoken about how her long-standing role on The Kapil Sharma Show affected her film career. In an interview with News18, she revealed that despite her popularity, she has struggled to land acting roles in recent years.
Archana, who replaced Navjot Singh Sidhu in 2019, became a familiar face on Indian television. While the show brought her back into the spotlight, she admitted it also limited her availability for films. “We used to shoot nearly 100 episodes a year,” she said, explaining the demanding schedule.
The actress shared that she had to decline several film projects due to her TV commitments. Recalling one such opportunity, she told News18, “I got a call for a 25-day shoot in Scotland, but I couldn’t leave the show.” Over time, repeated refusals led filmmakers to stop approaching her altogether.
What concerns Archana most is the perception shift within the industry. “No matter how much I try, I’m not being able to convince filmmakers,” she said, adding, “They still think I’m somebody who sits on a chair and laughs.” Her statement highlights the challenge of being typecast despite decades of experience.
Archana Puran Singh’s journey began in the early 1980s with films like Nikaah, followed by a lead role in Jalwa (1987) alongside Naseeruddin Shah. Over the years, she became known for memorable performances in films such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, De Dana Dan, and Bol Bachchan, often in comic roles that shaped her public image.
She was recently seen in the Netflix film Toaster, produced by Rajkummar Rao. Speaking about the opportunity, she credited her earlier collaboration in Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video for opening that door. She expressed hope that Toaster would lead to more acting offers in the future.
With The Great Indian Kapil Show now streaming on Netflix in a seasonal format, Archana sees a new window of opportunity. “I don’t have to stay in India all year now. I can travel and shoot,” she shared, indicating a shift that could help her re-enter films.
Archana’s remarks have sparked conversations around typecasting in Bollywood. Many actors transitioning from television to films often face similar challenges, where strong screen identities become limiting labels.
Looking ahead, Archana Puran Singh is optimistic about reclaiming her space as an actor. With more flexible schedules and renewed visibility through streaming platforms, she aims to take on diverse roles and break away from the “laughter judge” image that has defined her in recent years.
